  • Decision on public goods can only be made by a public authority is a corollary of Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem

Subjects: Management Science >> Management Theory Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Utilization of Information Subjects: Other Disciplines >> Synthetic discipline submitted time 2024-05-12

Abstract: Purpose/Significance Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem (AIT) was stated and proved by Kenneth Joseph Arrow, one of the winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1972. The New Economic and Financial Dictionary defines that the statement that a reasonable strategic decision on public goods can only be made by a competent public authority as a corollary of AIT. This corollary relationship has been widely circulated on the Internet and taught in classrooms, and established as a correct conclusion with AIT. However, this corollary relationship is not rigorous, or even wrong, and would lead the study on public choice, public economics, welfare economics, administrative jurisprudence and other disciplines in our country astray. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify misdirection from the theory, steer relevant disciplines toward the right direction.  Method/Process Literature examination method were employed to review the origin and development of this corollary relationship, clarify the connotation and extension of related concepts in different disciplines, as well as the evolution logic of the relationship between related concepts. Result/Conclusion Relevant literature shows that this statement was first associated with AIT in the article Administrative Compulsion and the Realization of the Public Interest. Later, it was excerpted as a definition of AIT in the New Economic and Financial Dictionary and became a corollary of AIT. If the statement were a corollary of AIT, then, as long as AIT holds, decisions on public goods can only be imposed or dictated by a public authority. But in this evolution process, the connotations of public goods and public authority have changed in different disciplines, and the relation between them has evolved, taking the statement as a corollary of AIT is not very tight. AIT indeed causes public goods decision-making difficulties, but studies in the field of public choice does not conclude that the dilemma of decision-making on supply of public goods, arising from AIT, should be left to the imposition or dictatorship of the public authorities. On the contrary, they are committed to the institutional design of the voting mechanism in order to ensure that the supply of public goods is decided by population.

  • Multi-label text emotion classification based on self-attention mechanism and emotion semantic similarity modeling

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Library Science submitted time 2024-05-04

Abstract: 【 Objective 】 Aiming at the problem that existing multi-label text emotion classification algorithms are difficult to model and utilize the semantic correlation between emotions, a multi-label text emotion classification method based on self-attention mechanism is proposed. 【 Methods 】 In this paper, a multi-label text emotion classification neural network (AttEmoNet) based on self-attentional emotion association modeling was proposed. The semantic meaning and similarity of emotion labels were modeled by self-attentional emotion association module. A text encoder based on large-scale pre-training model was used to encode the input text as a semantic vector. Finally, the matching degree of text semantic vector and emotion semantic vector is calculated by neural network to realize more accurate emotion category recognition. 【 Results 】 The validity of AttEmoNet was verified by comparison experiments on NLPCC2014 and GoEmotions. The results show that the text sentiment classification performance of AttEmoNet is significantly improved compared with the baseline methods Random, cnsenti, SVM and BERT. Compared with the existing optimal baseline method, the classification Precision of AttEmoNet increased by 13.33% at the highest, the Recall by 21.80% at the highest, and the F1-score by 12.74%. Meanwhile, the emotional semantic association matrix modeled by the AttEmoNet has good interpretability, which proves that the ATTEMONet has a good ability to model emotional semantics. Limitation The emergence of large language model opens up a new idea for multi-label text emotion classification. In the future, the advantages of AttEmoNet and large language model will be combined to realize a more accurate and efficient multi-label text emotion classification algorithm. Conclusion In this paper, a multi-label text emotion classification neural network based on self-attention mechanism for emotion correlation modeling is proposed, which improves the emotion semantic and correlation modeling ability of the text emotion model and the performance of emotion recognition. The validity of the study is verified by comparative experiments on two public data sets.

  • Study on the Temporal Evolution of Literature Bradford Curves in the Context of Library Specialization

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Science submitted time 2024-04-30

Abstract: The Bradford law of bibliographic scattering is a fundamental law in bibliometrics and can provide valuable guidance to academic libraries in literature search and procurement. However, the Bradford curves can take various shapes at different time points and there is still a lack of causal explanation for it, so the prediction of its shape is still an open question. This paper attributes the deviation of Bradford curve from the theoretical J-shape to the integer constraints of the journal number and article number, and extends the Leimkuhler and Egghe’s formula to cover the core region of very productive journals, where the theoretical journal number of which fall below one. The key parameters of the extended formula are identified and studied by using the Simon-Yule model. The reasons for the Groos Droop are explained and the critical point for the shape change are studied. Finally, the proposed formulae are validated with the empirical data found in the literature. It is found that the proposed method can be used to predict the evolution of Bradford curves and thus guide the academic library for scientific literature procurement and utilization.

  • Analysis of effects to scientific impact indicators based on the coevolution of coauthorship and citation networks

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Science submitted time 2024-04-19

Abstract: While computer modeling and simulation are crucial for understanding scientometrics, their practical use in literature remains somewhat limited. In this study, we establish a joint coauthorship and citation network using preferential attachment. As papers get published, we update the coauthorship network based on each paper’s author list, representing the collaborative team behind it. This team is formed considering the number of collaborations each author has, and we introduce new authors at a fixed probability, expanding the coauthorship network. Simultaneously, as each paper cites a specific number of references, we add an equivalent number of citations to the citation network upon publication. The likelihood of a paper being cited depends on its existing citations, fitness value, and age. Then we calculate the journal impact factor and -index, using them as examples of scientific impact indicators. After thorough validation, we conduct case studies to analyze the impact of different parameters on the journal impact factor and -index. The findings reveal that increasing the reference number  or reducing the paper’s lifetime  significantly boosts the journal impact factor and average -index. On the other hand, enlarging the team size  without introducing new authors or decreasing the probability of newcomers  notably increases the average -index. In conclusion, it is evident that various parameters influence scientific impact indicators, and their interpretation can be manipulated by authors. Thus, exploring the impact of these parameters and continually refining scientific impact indicators are essential. The modeling and simulation method serves as a powerful tool in this ongoing process, and the model can be easily extended to include other scientific impact indicators and scenarios.
