Abstract: During the COVID-19 pandemic, all age groups’ mental health has substantially declined. Compared to other age groups, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescent mental health problems was more salient, particularly on depression and anxiety. Previous studies, which were primarily conducted during the phase of COVID-19 pandemic, have mainly covered the first and second phases of COVID-19-related prevention and containment in China, without adequate attention being paid to the third and fourth phases of COVID-19-related prevention and containment in China. The present study thus investigated the developmental trajectories of depression and anxiety among adolescents, as well as the potential antecedent (psychological resilience) and outcome (prosocial tendency) of such trajectories in the late phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in China. In this study, 1170 adolescents in Shandong province were assessed at three time points with a six-month interval (Time 1=May 2021; Time 2=November 2021; Time 3=May 2022) from the normalization period of the pandemic through self-report questionnaires. The adolescents completed Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale during the three measurements. Furthermore, all adolescents completed the Connor‐Davidson Resilience Scale at Time 1 and Prosocial Tendencies Measure at Time 3.  According to the results of the latent growth curve models, adolescents’ depression and anxiety levels tended to decline. The higher the level of depression and anxiety at Time 1, the slower the decline over time. Furthermore, psychological resilience at Time 1 negatively predicted initial levels of depression and anxiety but positively predicted the decreasing speed of depression and anxiety trajectories. Concerning the outcomes, we found that the initial level and speed of depression trajectories significantly and negatively predicted the levels of prosocial tendency at Time 3. Regarding the anxiety trajectory, its intercept factor negatively predicted prosocial tendency at Time 3, but its slope factor’s predictive effect was non-significant. Finally, multi-group analyses revealed that both boys and girls showed declining trends in depression and anxiety over time, while girls scored significantly higher on depression and anxiety initially than boys. In conclusion, this research found that the changes in mental health (particularly depression and anxiety problems) among Chinese adolescents in the late phase of the COVID-19 pandemic were developing well, which provides empirical evidence for better construction of adolescent mental health service systems in China.

Abstract: To investigate the changes of mental health status of medical college students in China, data from 181 papers were analyzed using the cross-temporal meta-analysis. The reporting data were collected from 1993 to 2016 (N = 129613), applying the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90). Results showed that: 1) With only one exception (the phobic anxiety dimension), scores of all other 8 symptom dimensions of SCL-90 were negatively correlated with year, which indicated that the mental health level of medical college students in China has been improved over the past 24 years; 2) Scores of these 8 symptom dimensions were negatively correlated with the level of two social indicators (total expenditure for health and number of registered physicians), which suggested that these two social indicators may be key predicting factors for the increase of mental health status of Chinese medical college students; 3) The increasing trend was slightly more salient with male students than with their female counterparts, however, the gender difference was not significant; 4) The increasing trend of mental health status was more salient and comprehensive with freshmen than with non-freshmen of medical college students in China.

Abstract: The subjective well-being (SWB) of teachers affects not only their own mental health and career development, but also has flow-on effects for the well-being of students in their care, school processes and the sustainable development of education. As a consequence, the SWB of teachers has attracted the attention of researchers across various fields. Previous work on the SWB of Chinese teachers offers contradictory findings; while some studies have found the level of SWB of Chinese teachers to be high, others provide a more pessimistic assessment. The debate has proven difficult to untangle for two reasons: (1) different norms were applied in different studies, and (2) previous meta-analysis does not consider the effect of publication year. In order to address these limitations, and to explore the pattern and changing trajectory of Chinese teachers’ SWB over time, the current study applies a cross-temporal meta-analysis technique. Fifty-one samples/papers using the General Wellbeing Schedule (GWB) to investigate Chinese teachers’ SWB level (N= 13, 600) from 2002 to 2019 were included. Each sample was coded according to journal type, sampling area, learning stage, and sex ratio, these being used as independent or control variables. Our results showed that: (1) The total scores of SWB among Chinese teachers were negatively correlated by year, indicating that teachers’ SWB level has decreased steadily in the past 18 years. (2) The changes of eight social indicators, including social economic condition (residents’ consumption level, housing prices, elderly dependency ratio and educational expenditure), social connectedness (divorce rate, family size and urbanization level) and overall threat (crime rate), were key predicting factors for the decrease in SWB level among Chinese teachers. (3) The decreasing trend in SWB levels was more striking among primary and middle school teachers than for college teachers, with the mean SWB scores of college teachers being significantly higher than that of primary and middle school teachers. In conclusion, the present study showed that Chinese teachers’ SWB level has decreased in the context of rapid social change occurring in contemporary China. In addition, combined with the corresponding macro-social indicators, a three-dimensional theoretical framework is proposed to explain the SWB for teachers as a social group.
