  • The Characteristics of Reading Service Courses of Library and Information Science Education in India

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] There is a rather complete library service network and talent cultivating system in India, and its experience and practice in the construction of reading service courses would be of great reference value for our work in this field. [Method/process] This paper firstly visited the websites of the institutions engaged in library and information science education in India, then did case study on the courses of reading service. [Result/conclusion] It is found that there are two universities in India that systematically offer three reading service courses, which cover two representative service groups of library, i.e., children and adults. The content of each course is comprehensive, by studying it students will receive a systematic training in the library reading service theory and methods. There are three features with India’s reading service courses: highly targeted, emphasizing the cultivation of students’ practical ability and providing flexible online education, which can better meet the large demand for reading service talents in India and is worthy of reference in China. Three lessons can be drawn from the experience of India: to design curriculum system that cover the primary reading service librarian and target audience; to design and implement effective modular internship programs; to offer certificate courses over the Internet.

  • Reading Needs of Self-employed Individuals and the Construction of Reading Service System of Grassroots Libraries

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] By investigating the satisfaction of reading needs of the self-employed individuals, this study tries to inspect the construction of reading service system of grassroots libraries.[Method/process] In-depth interviews and survey were made with 30 self-employed individuals and the grassroots libraries around them to understand the characteristics of their reading behavior and how their reading needs are meet.[Result/conclusion] These self-employed individuals mainly met their reading needs by contacting mobile reading devices, online bookstores, physical bookstores and libraries, with the smartphone as the most popular and the library as the least popular. The community libraries are short of reading space and reading resources, there is no full-time librarian, and daily reading service is absent. The reason is that the district library is unable to participate in the administration of community libraries, and the evaluation on the district library is unable to promote the community libraries to play its role. It is suggested to strengthen the coordination at the government level and enhance the administrative function of the district and county libraries on the community libraries; to help the community libraries to carry out standardized daily services; to incorporate the service conditions and service efficiency of community libraries into the evaluation system of community and district libraries.

  • Study on the Problems and Countermeasures of Reading Services in Primary School Libraries: Taking Fuzhou City of Fujian Province as an Example

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Understanding the deep reasons of the poor reading services in primary school libraries is helpful to solve the problem fundamentally. [Method/process] The researcher went into 13 urban and rural primary schools in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, conducted a questionnaire survey on students, and conducted in-depth interviews with librarians, principals and two heads of local education administrative departments, to explore the practical logic and problems of reading services in primary school libraries from multiple perspectives. [Result/conclusion] The primary school libraries investigated follow a kind of practice logic of reaching standard,as a result, the hardware conditions are basically up to standards, however, the opening time, reading course setting and the development of reading service activities are not ideal. The reasons are as follows:policies fail to provide strong support for the development of library undertakings, lacking quantitative evaluation indicators for reading services, and librarians' enthusiasm is inhibited. Suggestions are proposed to strengthen the guiding and supporting role of polices, to give play to the evaluation and guidance function of the library societies and develop the evaluation indicators of school libraries that will promote reading services; and to strengthen the construction of professional librarians and encourage them to take the initiative.

  • A Comparative Study of Three Extracurricular Reading Groups on the Reading Behavior Intervention of Primary School Students

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] This paper explores the intervention forms and effects of three extracurricular reading groups of "literature circle", "reading club" and "dialogic reading", and the requirements for reading service talents, so as to provide evidence for selecting different reading intervention forms and cultivating reading service talents. [Method/process] The third grade pupils in the same class were evenly assigned to 4 extracurricular reading groups with different intervention levels, and four-week reading intervention experiment was carried out. Data was obtained by questionnaire survey, interview and reading measurement method. [Result/conclusion] This paper finds:①Clarifying roles and responsibilities before reading will promote thinking in reading and active communication after reading. Too much guidance will restrain communication, but autonomy will promote communication to improve the reading will and reading ability.②Each of the 3 extracurricular reading groups has its own advantages, and free reading without intervention also has a positive effect. ③Extracurricular reading groups have comprehensive requirements for reading service librarians, it is suggested to strengthen the cultivating of comprehensive quality and reading guidance theory of reading service talents, and to strengthen practice in classroom.

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] To carry out experimental research on reading service for rural children in a village library in poverty-stricken areas would be helpful to find effective strategies to promote the construction of grassroots libraries. [Method/process] The researcher worked as a volunteer in the one-month winter vacation in a village library of a state-level poverty-stricken county to carry out homework guidance and a series of reading activities for primary and junior high school students returning home for the Spring Festival. [Result/conclusion] The intervention of volunteers can effectively activate the Grassroots service points, and four suggestions are put forward for the grassroots libraries in poverty-stricken areas:① To build the reading service systems of the grassroots libraries according to local conditions, focus on the professional construction, management and operation of township branch libraries, and introduce professional talents to guide the reading services of the whole county; ② To set up a relatively independent reading space for easy management and operation; ③ To allocate reading resources for the village libraries that meet the needs of rural children; ④ To organize college students to serve as reading service volunteers in township and village libraries during the winter and summer vacations.

  • 我国中高纬度地区冻融指数变化与冷暖急转现象

    Abstract:利用我国中高纬度地区13个国家基准气候站近30 a日平均气温数据,分析中高纬度区域年冻融指数和冻融日数的变化趋势,结果表明:① 近30 a研究区融化指数(thawing index, TI)处于显著上升过程,冻结指数(freezing index, FI)呈微弱上升趋势。② 融化日数的上升和冻结日数下降趋势不显著。③ 日平均 TI 呈显著上升,日平均 FI 则微弱下降,小于-10 ℃的天数呈微弱上升趋势。冷暖季节日均气温有两极化发展趋势。④ 研究区大于10 ℃累计积温显著增加,小于-10 ℃累计积温呈下降趋势,冷暖在向两极发展的同时,过渡期日数显著缩短,冷暖急转现象尤为明显。⑤ TI各指标的波动明显小于FI,TI与纬度和海拔呈显著负相关,FI则与纬度和海拔呈正相关,海拔对TI的影响要大于FI,纬度和海拔越高,FI和冻结日数的变化越小,而对应的融化指标波动越大。整体来看,我国中高纬地区从20世纪90年代后存在增温减缓、冷暖季日均气温两极化及冷暖急转现象较为明显。
