  • Present and Future of Global Information Literacy: In Review of the European Conference on Information Literacy

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] The paper reviews the European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL) in the past five years, providing references for domestic scholars to understand the present situation and future trends of global information literacy. [Method/process] According to the author's experience of attending ECIL and conference materials & papers, the paper summarizes the conferences from the five aspects:the conference overview, the distribution of participating countries, the topics of the conference and the research hotspot, the various conference activities and the participating of Chinese scholars, to help domestic scholars understand the latest progress and the future development for information literacy. [Result/conclusion] The ECIL platform reflects the trend of global information literacy to some extent:focusing on the practical application,expanding the research field of information literacy education,extending more related concepts, enriching more target users and innovating new teaching process and means. The enthusiasm of Chinese scholars to participate in ECIL has been continuously improved. From the first two sessions, only scholars from Taiwan participated, but in 2017, scholars and postgraduates from mainland China participated in the ECIL in various ways. Scholars in related fields in the world have fully demonstrated the latest achievements and contributions made by Chinese universities and research institutes in the field of information literacy. Finally, it is recommended that the Chinese information literacy community draw on the advanced experience of ECIL in both content and form.

  • Beyond Information Literacy Education: the Changes and Prospect——15 Years' Practical Exploration in the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] The change of information environment and the evolution of the research paradigm bring about new opportunities for information literacy education, so we need to rethink the traditional information literacy education, from traditional information literacy education to beyond information literacy education, and to promote the changes of information literacy education model.[Method/process] By analyzing the concepts and connotations of information, information literacy and the evolution, this paper made a comparative analysis of the two systems of information literacy education and beyond information literacy education, and based on the practice of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the structural changes of information literacy education were outlined.[Result/conclusion] The key of beyond information literacy education is that the purpose of information literacy education needs to be clear, the goal needs to be advanced, the perspective needs to be switched, and the effect needs to be reflected. The strategies are to train users from general ability to advanced ability, cross the disciplinary boundary of information literacy education, realize the reform of information literacy content and system, focus on the application of education and teaching techniques, develop the appropriate context of beyond information literacy education, and improve the spatial configuration of beyond information literacy.

  • On Curriculum Information Literacy

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance]This article advocates curriculum information literacy.    [Method/process] Based on the essence of curriculum information literacy, this article expounds the necessity of implementing curriculum information literacy from the perspectives of solving the shortage of library teaching personnel, promoting the professional development of subject teachers, improving the teaching effectiveness of information literacy, expanding the scope of education, and enhancing students' self-awareness. At the same time, it expounds the possibility of implementing curriculum information literacy from the perspectives of constructivist learning theory, situational learning theory, and the practice of the TTT teaching model of information literacy education in American universities.[Result/conclusion]Whether as an educational concept or a teaching model, curriculum information literacy is worthy of vigorous research and promotion in information literacy education in colleges and universities. It is suggested that Chinese universities should promote the effective implementation of curriculum information literacy through updating concepts, enhancing the information literacy of subject teachers, providing rich educational and teaching resources for information literacy, and adhering to overall planning and linkage.
     

  • On Curriculum Information Literacy

    Abstract: Curriculum information literacy is a teaching mode that integrates information literacy education content into professional curriculum teaching plans through information literacy training for subject teachers, and is carried out by subject teachers. Implementing curriculum information literacy can solve problems such as the shortage of teaching staff in libraries, promoting the professional development of subject teachers, improving teaching effectiveness, and expanding education coverage, and can enhance students' self-awareness in learning. Constructivist learning theory and situational learning theory provide theoretical basis for curriculum information literacy. The practice of TTT teaching mode in information literacy education in American universities provides a practical foundation for curriculum information literacy. Chinese universities should promote the effective implementation of curriculum information literacy by updating their concepts, enhancing the information literacy education ability of subject teachers, equipping them with abundant information literacy education and teaching resources, and adhering to overall coordination and linkage.
     

  • The connotation, goals and countermeasures of digital information literacy education in colleges and universities

    Abstract: [Purpose / significance]Digital information literacy education in colleges and universities needs to be strengthened. On the basis of drawing on existing education strategies at home and abroad, taking the connotation of digital information literacy education in colleges and universities as the starting point, scientific and reasonable goals are set and corresponding countermeasures are proposed, in order to provide reference for digital information literacy education in Chinese colleges and universities.[Method / process]Through the systematic combing of the practice of digital information literacy education carried out by university libraries, the main problems existing in digital information literacy education in colleges and universities are analyzed, goals are set, and countermeasures for the quality development of digital information literacy education for college students in the new era are proposed.[Result / conclusion]We should attach great importance to and support digital information literacy education in Chinese colleges and universities, take university libraries as the main educational position, enrich the content of digital information literacy courses and education and teaching methods, and jointly cooperate with the government and society to form a multi-department collaborative education model, so as to promote students' improvement of digital information literacy in the practice of college career.

  • The Comparison and Thinking of Sino-America University Libraries'Online Information Literacy Instruction

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Based on the comparative analysis of the theory and practice of online information literacy education (OILI) in Chinese and American university libraries, this paper discusses the related issues of OILI in China.[Method/process] By means of literature research, website research and other methods, the paper tried to understand and analyze the differences of OILI between China and the USA.[Result/conclusion] The main contents of OILI of Sino-America university libraries are relatively consistent, but there is room for improvement in the treatment of some contents in China. University Libraries in China and the United States adopt various forms of OILI, but the differences are obvious. After a comparative analysis of various forms, it is considered that online tutorial is one of the effective forms of OILI. The paper proposes the suggestion as follows:Being both realistic and exquisite are important for the development of OILI. It is necessary to advocate online tutorials for the completion of contents and diversity in forms. It is also needed to pay attention to the cultivation of high-level skills, and thus promote the integration of information, research and scholarship.

  • Research on the Paradigm Shift of International Information Literacy

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] This paper aims to explain the development of international information literacy and provides reference for domestic development. [Method/process] Based on the literature in SCI、SSCI with the subject of information literacy, this paper used bibliometric method for analysis, and focused on the conceptual literatures in the analysis results. [Result/conclusion] The information literacy development process is divided into 4 stages(1970s,1980s,1990s-2004,2004-present),and two paradigms(information literacy1.0 and information literacy2.0) according to information landscape, technology, information literacy connotation, framework, educational philosophy and practice chronologically. Guided by social constructivism and connectivism, information literacy2.0 extends the context from education to work and daily life, and extends from a set of individual skills to collaborative social practice including cognitive, metacognitive, emotional, attitude factors and so on. In higher education, information literacy education expands from source approach, technical approach, behavioral approach, process approach to more emphasis on process approach, communication approach and threshold concepts.

  • Practice and Exploration of Information Literacy Education in Professional Libraries: A Case Study of Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences

    Abstract: Purpose/significance Provide references of undertaking information literacy education for domestic professional libraries by summarizing the experience and shortcomings of information literacy education in Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Method/process Taking educational objects, educational teams, implementation approaches and educational content into account with the guidance of educational objectives and application scenarios, to craft an integrated framework of information literacy education along with dynamic adjustment and continuous optimization based on educational feedback. Result/conclusion Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences gradually formed a multilayered, diversified, cyclically and dynamically improvable information literacy education system with clustered and grouped educational objects, talents-assembled education teams, varied and concurrent educational approaches, well-rounded educational contents, cyclic and ascending educational effects to meet those from different disciplines and levels. However, it requires information literacy educators to continuously improve their existing service models and provide information literacy education to meet the needs of scientific researchers due to continuous emergence of new technologies, concepts, and demands.

  • Research on the Perceived Value of Novice Users to Information Literacy Education——Based on Grounded Theory

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Exploring the fit mechanism between the value of information literacy education and user perception can provide inspiration and reference for the value marketing of information literacy education in colleges and universities.[Method/process] Focusing on the information literacy learning practice of novice users, taking college students as the research object, based on the theory of perceived value, and using grounded theoretical research methods, this paper explored the construction of a concept model of information literacy education value perceived by novice user.[Result/conclusion] The perceived value of novice users to information literacy education was driven by teaching interaction and task situation; the value of information literacy education includes six main categories:resource value, information literacy identity value, peer value, emotional value, teaching value and cost value. The relationship between the main categories showed complexity and differences.

  • A Systematic Review on the Assessment of Information Literacy Teaching Effectin Higher Education

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] By analyzing the effectiveness, experience and deficiencies of information literacy teaching assessment in domestic universities, the paper aimed to provide reference for subsequent empirical research.[Method/process] Based on the articles in China Academic Journal Network Publishing Database, and focusing on the effect of information literacy teaching and student learning, this paper discussed the assessment methods, types, and subjects using systematic review method.[Result/conclusion] The effectiveness of information literacy assessment used various methods(such as survey, scale, performance assessment, and group evaluation), and it had achieved certain achievements. However, the scientification of assessment methods, the diversification of assessment types, and the professionalization of assessment subjects still need to be improved.

  • Exploratory Study on Information Literacy Instruction of Blackboard with SPOC Pattern

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] In order to make up for the shortcomings of the online teaching or offline teaching mode, this paper explores hybrid teaching and learning pattern in library information literacy instruction by using Blackboard platform to provide a better choice for our library information literacy instruction, so as to promote students' comprehensive quality. [Method/process] It makes use of the Blackboard platform in library information literacy instruction with using the SPOC offline learning modes. Quantitative evaluation and qualitative interview are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the instruction. [Result/conclusion] Through the comparative study of traditional and the new teaching modes, it is found that through the mix learning program, students' performance is significantly better than traditional learning(P=0.000*, <0.05), especially better in course participation and teacher-student interaction through qualitative evaluation.

  • The Construction of Information Literacy Education Ecosystem in University from the Perspective of ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education: A Case Study of Library of City University of Hong Kong

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Understanding the logical relationship and educational level of the threshold concept in ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education is the prerequisite and foundation of constructing a university’s information literacy education ecosystem. [Method/process] It studied the construction process of the ecological chain of the information literacy education in universities, by making a three-dimensional analysis of the logical architecture of information literacy in the framework and explained the educational framework of information literacy, based on combining the case of the "historical and cultural study of the lighthouse" in the library of City University Hong Kong. [Result/conclusion] The construction of the ecological system of information literacy education is a reliable and stable education system, which is based on cultivating students’ judgment, analytical power and research ability, including general education, skill education, expanding education, and the complete educational process of the cooperation of multiple personnel and organizations.

  • Research on Workplace Information Literacy: New Progress in Information Literacy Research Abroad

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] In view of the new development of information literacy research abroad, this paper systematically introduces the research on information literacy in the workplace, aiming at providing ideas and references for the research of information literacy in China.[Method/process] By adopting the combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative research methods, analysis of relevant research literature, this paper introduces the core concepts, theoretical basis and research dimensions three aspects, summarizes the characteristics of foreign research in this field, and the trend related research is prospected.[Result/conclusion] Research on information literacy in the workplace is the new growth point of foreign information literacy research. It is the main driving factor of this research to promote the unification of information literacy understanding between different disciplines and industries. The research has helped to promote the reform of information literacy, conceptual reflection of information literacy and the combination of information literacy and vocational characteristics.

  • Investigation and Analysis of the Information Literacy MOOC in China

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Based on the practice of Chinese information literacy MOOCs, the paper puts forward some effective suggestions to the building and development of information literacy.[Method/process] By applying the method of literature research and case analysis, it investigates 35 information literacy MOOCs of the domestic main MOOC platforms. And with comparison of the new "Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education", in terms of teaching content, teaching mode, teaching resources, teaching interaction and feedback, etc., it analyzes the present situation of domestic information literacy MOOCs construction.[Result/conclusion] By analyzing the current situation of construction and application, this paper puts forward some suggestions to improve the construction and development of information literacy education.

  • Improvement Strategies for the Utilization of Patent Literature in Universities from the Perspective of Intellectual Property Information Literacy

    Abstract: With citation analysis, this article initially examines the types of references in journal articles in the field of natural sciences collected by the CNKI from C9 League universities during 2015 to 2020, to indirectly understand the current status of patent literature utilization in universities. Subsequently, it uses interview method to investigate the usage of patent literature among the faculty research groups and students of science and engineering at Hunan University, to directly comprehend the situation and related factors influencing the utilization of patent literature in universities. Lastly, from the perspective of intellectual property information literacy, this paper proposes relevant strategies to improve the utilization of patent literature by teachers and students in universities.

  • Flipped Classroom Teaching Model and Its Application in the Information Literacy Education

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] With regards to the current scholarship of flipped classroom research, a flipped classroom teaching model is constructed, based on the theory of teaching objective classification. The relevant empirical research is then conducted to verify the feasibility of the model, in order to provide reference for our colleagues. [Method/process] The teaching model is applied in the graduate students' course of Medical Literature Management and Information Analysis, and the implementation measures of each stage are elaborated and summarized from both the teacher's perspective and the students' perspective. [Result/conclusion] The empirical research leads to the conclusion that the flipped classroom teaching is effective. The successful teaching results from the support of teaching theory, the learner-centered instructional design, well-prepared micro-curriculum resources, the application of educational technology, and a fully functional teaching platform.

  • Research on information liberal education under the learning center of “Cloud Library”

    Abstract: With the development of the Internet sharing technology innovation in our country, the functions of university libraries have changed in different degrees, and the idea of cloud library has been put forward, there is a growing demand for the purpose, form and content of university information liberal education. With the rapid development of computer network and communication technology, network resources are becoming more and more abundant, which provides convenient conditions for information dissemination and practice. The library needs to re-examine the current development environment, pay close attention to the development trend of social information environment, fully explore the users' information needs, and emphasize the subject service based on the users' needs development, in order to adapt to the new development environment. Based on the current information literacy education of University Library, this paper discusses how to create more convenient service places for the opening and sharing of information resources and services from the perspective of cloud library.
     

  • Research on TTT Teaching Mode of Information Literacy Education in American Universities

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] To see into the implementation effect of TTT teaching mode in information literacy education in the United States and explore its practical value.  [Method/process]The methods of literature research and content analysis were taken in this paper, combined with the results of network survey, to study the research and practice of TTT teaching model in American information literacy education. This paper focuses on the attitudes of all parties in the United States towards the implementation of the TTT model, the basic elements of the implementation of the TTT model, and the effects of the implementation of the TTT model in information literacy education. [Result/conclusion]The results show that the TTT teaching model is at least partially successful in information literacy education in American universities. This paper puts forward corresponding suggestions on the implementation of TTT teaching mode in information literacy education in Chinese universities from three aspects: teaching management departments, university libraries and professional teachers.
     

  • A Comparative Study of Scholarly Publishing Literacy Education Between Chinese and American University Libraries

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] With the increasingly complex scholarly publishing and communication mechanisms,scholarly publishing literacy has become an indispensable skill for researchers.The scholarly publishing literacy education of American university libraries is at the forefront of the world, which can provide China guidance for scholarly publishing literacy education. [Method/process] This paper selected the top 10 university libraries in the United States and 40 Double First-Class university libraries in China as the survey objects,and investigated the scholarly publishing literacy education practice carried out by these libraries.This paper compared and analyzed the similarities and differences of scholarly publishing literacy education between the two countries from two aspects:education form and education content. [Result/conclusion] The enlightenment to academic publishing literacy education of University Library in China is:deepening education cooperation, promoting the continuous improvement of academic publishing literacy education; selecting appropriate education forms, taking into account the system and pertinence of education; building a comprehensive education content system in accordance with the needs of academic publishing.

  • The Integration of Information Literacy and Academic Advising

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] The information literacy reform is much more embodied in online or blended teaching, but less more on knowledge, communication and community etc. The university library have to seek a feasible and practical path to gradually promote the reform.[Method/process] Academic advising plays an important role in higher education. By a structural analysis of academic advising and information literacy from the 4 aspects such as stakeholders, content, practice, target, the commonness and characteristics were analyzed.[Result/conclusion] Information literacy and academic advising both should integrated for individual development. From the perspective of integrated development, library should gradually promote the reform of information literacy: pay attention to the cooperation at the campus for continuous injection of inform power; embed academic process to much enhance the education influence; develop community learning to improve the education effect. Then information literacy can support students' overall development fully and deeply, promote change continuously to play advantages in talents cultivation.
