  • Searching for compact objects in binaries with Gaia DR3

    摘要: We search for compact objects in binaries based on Gaia DR3. A sample of ten targets is derived under the conditions: radial velocity variable, low temperature ($T_{\rm eff} 1 M_\odot$), and ellipsoidal-like light curves. Two targets have LAMOST spectroscopic observations, one of which is a double-lined spectroscopic binary. The observational data of seven targets are not self-consistent, since their photometric periods are even shorter than the theoretical minimum orbital periods calculated by the stellar parameters from Gaia DR3. After excluding these seven inconsistent targets and another target contaminated by a near-bright star, the remaining two targets may contain compact objects worth follow-up observations. This work may serve as an example to demonstrate the feasibility of searching for compact objects in the massive Gaia data.

  • Supermassive Black Hole and Broad-line Region in NGC~5548: Results from Five-season Reverberation Mapping

    摘要: NGC 5548 is one of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected for our long-term spectroscopic monitoring with the Lijiang 2.4~m telescope, aiming at investigating the origin and evolution of the broad-line regions (BLRs), accurately measuring the mass of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs), and understanding structure and evolution of the AGN. We have performed five-season observations for NGC~5548 with the median sampling interval ranging from 1.25 to 3 days. The light curves of the 5100~\AA\ continuum and broad emission lines are measured after subtracting contamination of the host galaxy starlight. The time lags of the broad He~{\sc ii}, He~{\sc i}, H$\gamma$, and H$\beta$ lines with respect to the 5100~\AA\ continuum are obtained for each season and their mean time lags over the five seasons are 0.69, 4.66, 4.60, 8.43 days, respectively. The H$\gamma$ and H$\beta$ velocity-resolved lag profiles in the seasons of 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2021 are constructed, from which an ``M-shaped'' structure is found in 2015 but disappears after 2018. Our five-season reverberation mapping (RM) yields an averaged virial SMBH mass of $M_\bullet/10^7M_\odot=14.22$, with a small standard deviation of $1.89$. By combining the previous 18 RM campaigns and our five-season campaign for NGC~5548, we find that there exists a time lag of 3.5~years between the changes in the BLR size and optical luminosity. In addition, we also construct the BLR radius$-$luminosity relation and the virial relation for NGC~5548.

  • Searching for Compact Object Candidates from LAMOST Time-Domain Survey of Four K2 Plates

    摘要: The time-domain (TD) surveys of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) yield high-cadence radial velocities, paving a new avenue to study binary systems including compact objects. In this work, we explore LAMOST TD spectroscopic data of four K2 plates and present a sample of six single-lined spectroscopic binaries that may contain compact objects. We conduct analyses using phase-resolved radial velocity measurements of the visible star, to characterize each source and to infer the properties of invisible companion. By fitting the radial velocity curves for the six targets, we obtain accurate orbital periods, ranging from $\sim$ (0.6-6) days, and radial velocity semi-amplitudes, ranging from $\sim$ (50-130) km s$^{-1}$. We calculate the mass function of the unseen companions to be between 0.08 and 0.17 $M_{\odot}$. Based on the mass function and the estimated stellar parameters of the visible star, we determine the minimum mass of the hidden star. Three targets, J034813, J063350, and J064850, show ellipsoidal variability in the light curves from K2, ZTF, and TESS surveys. Therefore, we can put constraints on the mass of the invisible star using the ellipsoidal variability. We identify no X-ray counterparts for these targets except for J085120, of which the X-ray emission can be ascribed to stellar activity. We note that the nature of these six candidates is worth further characterization utilizing multi-wavelength follow-up observations.

  • The Disk Veiling Effect of the Black Hole Low-Mass X-ray Binary A0620-00

    摘要: The optical light curves of quiescent black hole low-mass X-ray binaries often exhibit significant non-ellipsoidal variabilities, showing the photospheric radiation of the companion star is veiled by other source of optical emission. Assessing this "veiling" effect is critical to the black hole mass measurement. Here in this work, we carry out a strictly simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric campaign on the prototype of black hole low-mass X-ray binary A0620-00. We find that for each observation epoch, the extra optical flux beyond a pure ellipsoidal modulation is positively correlated with the fraction of veiling emission, indicating the accretion disk contributes most of the non-ellipsoidal variations. Meanwhile, we also obtain a K2V spectral classification of the companion, as well as the measurements of the companion's rotational velocity $v \sin i = 83.8\pm1.9$ km s$^{-1}$ and the mass ratio between the companion and the black hole $q=0.063\pm0.004$.

  • Fast Outflowing Warm Absorbers in Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy PG 1001+054 Revealed by HST/COS Spectra

    摘要: Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxies are an important type of active galactic nucleus (AGN), generally expected to be accreting at high Eddington rate. The properties of their outflows and importance of AGN feedback remain intriguing. We report on the discovery of fast outflowing warm absorbers (WAs) in the NLS1 PG 1001+054, with velocities in the range of 7000 to 9000 kilometers per second. They are identified with blueshifted Lyman alpha, N v and Si iv lines in the high resolution ultraviolet (UV) spectra taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We perform photoionization modeling using XSTAR with three WAs. The derived physical properties are typical of WAs in terms of ionization and column density, whereas the outflow velocities are significantly higher. The estimated location of these WAs ranges from 1 to 73 parsecs away from the AGN. Together with previous detection of high ionization absorber in the X-ray for PG 1001+054, we suggest that the fast outflowing UV absorber is probably a part of a multiphase outflow. Such structure is likely produced by the outflow launched from AGN at accretion disk scale, which shocks the ambient ISM producing stratified absorbers. Assuming contribution from the three WAs at tens of parsecs, the estimated ratio between the kinetic power of the outflow and AGN Eddington luminosity could reach 1.7 percent, raising the possibility of sufficient influence on the host galaxy when compared to some theoretical models for efficient AGN feedback.

  • Velocity-resolved Reverberation Mapping of Changing-look Active Galactic Nucleus NGC~4151 During Outburst Stage: Evidence for Kinematics Evolution of Broad-line Region

    摘要: Changing-look active galactic nucleus NGC~4151, which has attracted a lot of attention, is undergoing the second dramatic outburst stage in its evolutionary history. To investigate the geometry and kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR), and measure the mass of supermassive black hole in NGC~4151, we perform a seven-month photometric and spectroscopic monitoring program in 2020--2021, using the 2.4 m telescope at Lijiang Observatory. We successfully measure the time lags of the responses from broad \ha, \hb, \hg, \hei, and \heii\ emission lines to continuum variation, which are $7.63_{-2.62}^{+1.85}$, $6.21_{-1.13}^{+1.41}$, $5.67_{-1.94}^{+1.65}$, $1.59_{-1.11}^{+0.86}$, and $0.46_{-1.06}^{+1.22}$ days, respectively, following radial stratification. The ratios of time lags among these lines are $1.23 : 1.00 : 0.91 : 0.26 : 0.07$. We find that the continuum lag between the ultraviolet and optical bands can significantly affect the lag measurements of \hei\ and \heii. Virial and infalling gas motions coexist in this campaign, which is different from previous results, implying the evolutionary kinematics of BLR. Based on our measurements and previous ones in the literature, we confirm that the BLR of NGC~4151 is basically virialized. Finally, we compute the black hole mass through multiple lines, and the measurement from \hb\ to be $ 3.94_{-0.72}^{+0.90} \times 10^7 M_{\odot}$, which is consistent with previous results. The corresponding accretion rate is $0.02_{-0.01}^{+0.01} L_{\rm Edd} c^{-2}$, implying a sub-Eddington accretor.

  • A long-period pre-ELM system discovered from LAMOST medium-resolution survey

    摘要: We present LAMOST~J041920.07+072545.4 (hereafter J0419), a close binary consisting of a bloated extremely low mass pre-white dwarf (pre-ELM WD) and a compact object with an orbital period of 0.607189~days. The large-amplitude ellipsoidal variations and the evident Balmer and He~I emission lines suggest a filled Roche lobe and ongoing mass transfer. No outburst events were detected in the 15 years of monitoring of J0419, indicating a very low mass transfer rate. The temperature of the pre-ELM, $T_\mathrm{eff} = 5793_{-133}^{+124}\,\rm K$, is cooler than the known ELMs, but hotter than most CV donors. Combining the mean density within the Roche lobe and the radius constrained from our SED fitting, we obtain the mass of the pre-ELM, $M_1 = 0.176\pm 0.014\,M_\odot$. The joint fitting of light and radial velocity curves yields an inclination angle of $i = 66.5_{-1.7}^{+1.4}$ degrees, corresponding to the compact object mass of $M_2 = 1.09\pm 0.05\,M_\odot$. The very bloated pre-ELM has a smaller surface gravity ($\log g = 3.9\pm 0.01$, $R_1 = 0.78 \pm 0.02\,R_\odot$) than the known ELMs or pre-ELMs. The temperature and the luminosity ($L_\mathrm{bol} = 0.62_{-0.10}^{+0.11}\,L_\odot$) of J0419 are close to the main sequence, which makes the selection of such systems through the HR diagram inefficient. Based on the evolutionary model, the relatively long period and small $\log g$ indicate that J0419 could be close to the "bifurcation period" in the orbit evolution, which makes J0419 to be a unique source to connect ELM/pre-ELM WD systems, wide binaries and cataclysmic variables.

  • Accretion Disk Size Measurements of Active Galactic Nuclei Monitored by the Zwicky Transient Facility

    摘要: We compile a sample of 92 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z<0.75 with $gri$ photometric light curves from the archival data of the Zwicky Transient Facility and measure the accretion disk sizes via continuum reverberation mapping. We employ Monte Carlo simulation tests to assess the influences of data sampling and broad emission lines and select out the sample with adequately high sampling cadences (3 days apart in average) and minimum contaminations of broad emission lines. The inter-band time delays of individual AGNs are calculated using the interpolated cross-correlation function and then these delays are fitted with a generalized accretion disk model, in which inter-band time delays are a power function of wavelength, black hole mass, and luminosity. A Markov-chain Monte Carlo method is adopted to determine the best parameter values. Overall the inter-band time delays can be fitted with the $\tau \ \propto \lambda^{4/3}$ relation as predicted from a steady-state, optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disk, however, the yielded disk size is systematically larger than expected, although the ratio of the measured to theoretical disk sizes depend on using the emissivity -- or responsivity -- weighted disk radius. These results are broadly consistent with previous studies, all together raising a puzzle about the "standard" accretion disk model.

  • The Nearest Neutron Star Candidate in a Binary Revealed by Optical Time-domain Surveys

    摘要: Recent studies have revealed the global deposition on Earth of radioactive elements (e.g., $^{60}$Fe) resulting from the metal-enriched ejecta of nearby (within $\sim 100$ pc) supernova explosions. The majority of neutron stars in our Solar neighborhood remain to be discovered. Here we report the discovery of the nearest ($127.7 \pm 0.3$ pc) neutron star candidate in the single-lined spectroscopic binary LAMOST J235456.76+335625.7 (hereafter J2354). Utilizing the multi-epoch spectra and high-cadence periodic light curves, we measure the mass of the visible star ($M_{\rm vis}=0.70\pm 0.05\ M_{\odot}$) and determine the mass function of the invisible object $f(M)=0.525 \pm 0.004\ M_{\odot}$, i.e., the mass of the unseen compact object is $M_{\rm inv} \geq 1.26 \pm 0.03M_{\odot}$. The excess UV emission due to a hot supramassive white dwarf is absent. Hence, it is likely that J2354 harbors a neutron star. J2354 is X-ray dim (the $0.1$--$2.4$ keV luminosity $<10^{30}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$) since it is not detected in the ROSAT all-sky surveys in X-ray. One-hour exceptionally sensitive radio follow-up observations with FAST, the largest single-dish radio telescope, failed to reveal any radio pulsating signals (the potential pulse power at $1.4$ GHz is $<6.8\times 10^{23}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$). Hence, the neutron star candidate in J2354 can only be discovered via our time-resolved observations. The alternative scenario involving a nearby supramassive cold white dwarf cannot be fully excluded. Our discovery demonstrates a promising way to unveil the missing population of backyard inactive neutron stars or supramassive cold white dwarfs in binaries by exploring the optical time domain, thereby facilitating understanding of the supernovae explosion and metal-enrichment history in our Solar neighborhood.

  • A dynamically discovered and characterized non-accreting neutron star -- M dwarf binary candidate

    摘要: Optical time-domain surveys can unveil and characterize exciting but less-explored non-accreting and/or non-beaming neutron stars (NS) in binaries. Here we report the discovery of such a NS candidate using the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. The candidate, designated LAMOST J112306.9+400736 (hereafter J1123), is in a single-lined spectroscopic binary containing an optically visible M star. The star's large radial velocity variation and ellipsoidal variations indicate a relatively massive unseen companion. Utilizing follow-up spectroscopy from the Palomar 200-inch telescope and high-precision photometry from TESS, we measure a companion mass of $1.24_{-0.03}^{+0.03}~M_{\odot}$. Main-sequence stars with this mass are ruled out, leaving a NS or a massive white dwarf (WD). Although a massive WD cannot be ruled out, the lack of UV excess radiation from the companion supports the NS hypothesis. Deep radio observations with FAST yielded no detections of either pulsed or persistent emission. J1123 is not detected in numerous X-ray and gamma-ray surveys. These non-detections suggest that the NS candidate is not presently accreting and pulsing. Our work exemplifies the capability of discovering compact objects in non-accreting close binaries by synergizing the optical time-domain spectroscopy and high-cadence photometry.

  • Spectroastrometry and Reverberation Mapping: the Mass and Geometric Distance of the Supermassive Black Hole in the Quasar 3C 273

    摘要: The quasar 3C 273 has been observed with infrared spectroastrometry (SA) on broad Pa$\alpha$ line and optical reverberation mapping (RM) on broad H$\beta$ line. SA delivers information about the angular size and structure of the Pa$\alpha$ broad-line region (BLR), while RM delivers information about the physical size and structure of the H$\beta$ BLR. Based on the fact that the two BLRs share the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) and viewing inclination, a combination of SA and velocity-resolved RM (SARM) thereby allows us to simultaneously determine the SMBH mass and geometric distance through dynamically modeling the two BLRs. We construct a suite of dynamical models with different geometric configurations and apply a Bayesian approach to obtain the parameter inferences. Overall the obtained masses and distances are insensitive to specific BLR configurations but more or less depend on parameterizations of the vertical distributions. The most probable model, chosen in light of the Bayes factor, yields an angular-size distance of $\log\,(D_{\rm A}/{\rm Mpc}) = 2.83_{-0.28}^{+0.32}$ and SMBH mass of $\log\,(M_\bullet/M_\odot)=9.06_{-0.27}^{+0.21}$, which agrees with the relationships between SMBH masses and bulge properties. The BLRs have an inclination of $5_{-1}^{+1}$ degrees, consistent with that of the large-scale jet in 3C 273. Our approach reinforces the capability of SARM analysis to measure SMBH mass and distance of AGNs even though SA and RM observations are undertaken with different emission lines and/or in different periods.

  • White Dwarfs with Infrared Excess from LAMOST Data Release 5

    摘要: Infrared excess is an important probe of sub-stellar companions and/or debris disks around white dwarfs (WDs). Such systems are still rare for in-depth understanding of their formation and long-term evolution. One of the largest spectroscopic surveys carried out by the Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) recently released more than $3000$ WDs, a significant fraction of which have not undergone excess search. Here we present cross-correlation of LAMOST DR5 WD catalog with the Pan-STARRS, SDSS, UKIDSS, 2MASS, and {\it WISE}. By performing SED (spectral energy distribution) fitting for 846 WDs with $WISE$ detections, we identify 50 candidates with infrared excess, including 7 candidate WD+M dwarf binaries, 31 candidate WD+brown dwarf (BD) binaries and 12 candidate WD+dust disk systems. 8 of the dust disk systems are our new identifications. Utilizing a systematic survey with accurate stellar parameters derived from spectral fitting, our work is an important addition to previous searches for infrared excess from SDSS and {\it Gaia} WDs, and provides a significant ($\gtrsim8\%$) complement to current database of WDs with candidate BD companions and dust disks. The frequencies of WD+BD binaries and WD+dust disk systems are constrained to be $\lesssim3.7\%$ and $\sim1.4\%$, respectively. The properties of candidate dust disk systems are discussed. All of our candidates require follow-up observations for confirmation owing to limited spatial resolution of {\it WISE}.

  • A correction method for the telluric absorptions and application to Lijiang Observatory

    摘要: Observing a telluric standard star for correcting the telluric absorption lines of spectrum will take a significant amount of precious telescope time, especially in the long-term spectral monitoring project. Beyond that, it's difficult to select a suitable telluric standard star near in both time and airmass to the scientific object. In this paper, we present a method of correcting the telluric absorption lines by combining the advantages of long slit spectroscopy. By rotating the slit, we observed the scientific object and a nearby comparison star in one exposure, so that the spectra of both objects should have the same telluric transmission spectrum. The telluric transmission spectrum was constructed by dividing the observed spectrum of comparison star by its stellar template, and was used to correct the telluric absorption lines of the scientific object. Using the long slit spectrograph of Lijiang 2.4-meter telescope, we designed a long-term spectroscopic observation strategy, and finished a four-year spectroscopic monitoring for a pair of objects (an active galactic nuclei and an non-varying comparison star). We applied this method to correct the telluric absorption lines of the long-term monitored spectra by Lijiang 2.4-meter telescope, and investigated the variation of the telluric absorptions at Lijiang Observatory. We found that the telluric absorption transparency is mainly modulated by the seasonal variability of the relative humidity, airmass and seeing. Using the scatter of the [O~III] $\lambda$5007 fluxes emitted from the narrow-line region of active galactic nuclei as an indicator, we found that the correction accuracy of the telluric absorption lines is 1%.

  • Reverberation Mapping Measurements of Black Hole Masses and Broad-Line Region Kinematics in Mrk 817 and NGC 7469

    摘要: We present the results from a spectroscopic monitoring campaign to obtain reverberation-mapping measurements and investigate the broad-line region kinematics for active galactic nuclei (AGN) of Mrk~817 and NGC~7469. This campaign was undertaken with the Lijiang 2.4-meter telescope, the median spectroscopic sampling is 2.0 days for Mrk~817 and 1.0 days for NGC~7469. We detect time lags of the broad emission lines including H$\beta$, H$\gamma$, He~{\sc ii} and He~{\sc i} for both AGNs, and including Fe~{\sc ii} for Mrk~817 with respect to the varying AGN continuum at 5100~\AA. Investigating the relationship between line widths and time lags of the broad emission lines, we find that the BLR dynamics of Mrk~817 and NGC~7469 are consistent with the virial prediction. We estimate the masses of central supermassive black hole (SMBH) and the accretion rates of both AGNs. Using the data of this campaign, we construct the velocity-resolved lag profiles of the broad H$\gamma$, H$\beta$, and He~{\sc i} lines for Mrk~817, which show almost the same kinematic signatures that the time lags in the red wing are slightly larger than the time lags in the blue wing. For NGC~7469, we only clearly construct the velocity-resolved lag profiles of the broad H$\gamma$ and H$\beta$, which show very similar kinematic signatures to the BLR of Mrk~817. These signatures indicate that the BLR of Keplerian motion in both AGNs seemingly has outflowing components during the monitoring period. We discuss the kinematics of the BLR and the measurements including SMBH mass and accretion rates.

  • A dynamically discovered and characterized non-accreting neutron star -- M dwarf binary candidate

    摘要: Optical time-domain surveys can unveil and characterize exciting but less-explored non-accreting and/or non-beaming neutron stars (NS) in binaries. Here we report the discovery of such a NS candidate using the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. The candidate, designated LAMOST J112306.9+400736 (hereafter J1123), is in a single-lined spectroscopic binary containing an optically visible M star. The star's large radial velocity variation and ellipsoidal variations indicate a relatively massive unseen companion. Utilizing follow-up spectroscopy from the Palomar 200-inch telescope and high-precision photometry from TESS, we measure a companion mass of $1.24_{-0.03}^{+0.03}~M_{\odot}$. Main-sequence stars with this mass are ruled out, leaving a NS or a massive white dwarf (WD). Although a massive WD cannot be ruled out, the lack of UV excess radiation from the companion supports the NS hypothesis. Deep radio observations with FAST yielded no detections of either pulsed or persistent emission. J1123 is not detected in numerous X-ray and gamma-ray surveys. These non-detections suggest that the NS candidate is not presently accreting and pulsing. Our work exemplifies the capability of discovering compact objects in non-accreting close binaries by synergizing the optical time-domain spectroscopy and high-cadence photometry.
