摘要: Some studies suggest that the dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{d}$) in high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 5$) Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) are high. However, possible observational bias in $T_\mathrm{d}$ is yet to be understood. Thus, we perform a simple test using random realizations of LBGs with various stellar masses, dust temperatures, and dust-to-stellar mass ratios, and examine how the sample detected by ALMA is biased in terms of $T_\mathrm{d}$. We show that ALMA tends to miss high-$T_\mathrm{d}$ objects even at total dust luminosity. LBGs are, however, basically selected by the stellar UV luminosity. The dust-temperature bias in a UV-selected sample is complicated because of the competing effects between high $T_\mathrm{d}$ and low dust abundance. For ALMA Band 6, there is no tendency of high-$T_\mathrm{d}$ LBGs being more easily detected in our experiment. Thus, we suggest that the observed trend of high $T_\mathrm{d}$ in $z\gtrsim 5$ LBGs is real. We also propose that the 450 $\mu$m band is useful in further clarifying the dust temperatures. To overcome the current shallowness of 450 $\mu$m observations, we examine a future Antarctic 30-m class telescope with a suitable atmospheric condition for wavelengths $\lesssim 450~\mu$m, where the detection is not confusion-limited. We find that, with this telescope, an $L_\mathrm{IR}$-selected sample with $\log(L_\mathrm{IR}/\mathrm{L}_{\odot})>11$ is constructed for $z\gtrsim 5$, and detection in the intermediate-$M_\star$ (stellar mass) range [$9<\log (M_\star /M_{\odot})<9.5$] is much improved, especially at high $T_\mathrm{d}$.

摘要: The Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Strategic Survey is the latest-generation
multi-band optical imaging survey for galaxy evolution and structure formation.
The "Ultra-Deep" component of the HSC survey provides $grizy$ broad-band images
over $\sim3.4$ deg$^2$ to detection limits of $\sim26$-28 AB, along with
narrow-band images, in the COSMOS and the SXDS fields. These images provide an
unprecedented combination of depths and area coverage, for the studies galaxies
up to $z\sim7$. However, the lack of coverage at $<4000$ Ang implies incomplete
sampling of the rest-frame UV at $z\lesssim 3$, which is critically needed for
understanding the buildup of stellar mass in the later cosmic time. We
conducted a multi-year CFHT $u^\ast$-band imaging campaign in the two HSC
Ultra-Deep fields with CFHT MegaCam. By including shallower archival data, we
reach 5-$\sigma$ depths of $u^\ast=28.1$ and 28.4 (AB) at the centers of the
COSMOS and SXDS fields, respectively, and $u^\ast=27.7$ and 27.8 in the central
1 deg$^2$ fields. The image quality is $\gtrsim0.90$ arcsec, fairly good for
the $u^\ast$ band. Both the photometric and astrometric quality of our data are
excellent. We show that the combination of our $u^\ast$-band and HSC data can
lead to high-quality photometric redshifts at $z=0$-3, and robust measurements
of rest-frame UV on galaxies at $0.4

摘要: We use machine learning techniques to investigate their performance in classifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs), including X-ray selected AGNs (XAGNs), infrared selected AGNs (IRAGNs), and radio selected AGNs (RAGNs). Using known physical parameters in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field, we are able to well-established training samples in the region of Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. We compare several Python packages (e.g., scikit-learn, Keras, and XGBoost), and use XGBoost to identify AGNs and show the performance (e.g., accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and AUROC). Our results indicate that the performance is high for bright XAGN and IRAGN host galaxies. The combination of the HSC (optical) information with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) band-1 and WISE band-2 (near-infrared) information perform well to identify AGN hosts. For both type-1 (broad-line) XAGNs and type-1 (unobscured) IRAGNs, the performance is very good by using optical to infrared information. These results can apply to the five-band data from the wide regions of the HSC survey, and future all-sky surveys.

摘要: We present a set of multi-wavelength mosaics and photometric catalogs in the ALMA lensing cluster survey (ALCS) fields. The catalogs were built by reprocessing of archival data from the CHArGE compilation, taken by the $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ ($\textit{HST}$) in the RELICS, CLASH and Hubble Frontier Fields. Additionally we have reconstructed the $\textit{Spitzer}$ IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m mosaics, by utilising all the available archival IRSA/SHA exposures. To alleviate the effect of blending in such a crowded region, we have modelled the $\textit{Spitzer}$ photometry by convolving the $\textit{HST}$ detection image with the $\textit{Spitzer}$ PSF using the novel $\texttt{golfir}$ software. The final catalogs contain 218,000 sources, covering a combined area of 690 arcmin$^2$. These catalogs will serve as an important tool in aiding the search of the sub-mm galaxies in future ALMA surveys, as well as follow ups of the $\textit{HST}$ dark - IRAC sources. Coupled with the available $\textit{HST}$ photometry the addition of the 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m bands will allow us to place a better constraint on photometric redshifts and stellar masses of these objects, thus giving us an opportunity to identify high-redshift candidates for spectroscopic follow ups and answer the important questions regarding the epoch of reionization and formation of first galaxies.

摘要: We introduce an ALMA band 3 spectroscopic survey, targeting the brightest submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the COSMOS field. Here we present the first results based on the 18 primary SMGs that have 870 $\mu$m flux densities of $S_{870}=12.4-19.3$ mJy and are drawn from a parent sample of 260 ALMA-detected SMGs from the AS2COSMOS survey. We detect emission lines in 17 and determine their redshifts to be in the range of $z=2-5$ with a median of $3.2\pm0.3$. We confirm that SMGs with brighter $S_{870}$ are located at higher redshifts. The data additionally cover five fainter companion SMGs, and we obtain line detection in one. Together with previous studies, our results indicate that for SMGs that satisfy our selection, their brightest companion SMGs are physically associated with their corresponding primary SMGs in $\ge40$% of the time, suggesting that mergers play a role in the triggering of star formation. By modeling the foreground gravitational fields, $2$. We determine that about 90% of the primary SMGs have lines that are better described by double Gaussian profiles, and the median separation of the two Gaussian peaks is 430$\pm$40 km s$^{-1}$. This allows estimates of an average baryon mass, which together with the line dispersion measurements puts our primary SMGs on the similar mass-$\sigma$ correlation found on local early-type galaxies. Finally, the number density of our $z>4$ primary SMGs is found to be $1\times10^{-6}$ cMpc$^{-3}$, suggesting that they can be the progenitors of $z\sim3-4$ massive quiescent galaxies.

摘要: We report morphological analyses of seven submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at $z\sim2$ using the JWST NIRCam images taken as part of the public CEERS and PRIMER surveys. Through two-dimensional surface brightness profile fittings we find evidence of bulges in all the sample SMGs, in particular at F444W filter, suggesting an ubiquitous presence of stellar bulges. The median size of these bulges at F444W is found to be 0.7$\pm$1.0 kpc and its median Sersic index is 0.7$\pm$0.9. Structures akin to spiral arms and bars are also identified, although their asymmetric shapes, tidal features, as well as evidence of nearby galaxies at consistent redshifts as those of corresponding SMGs suggest that these SMGs are undergoing dynamical interactions, likely responsible for the triggering of their star-forming activities. Via the curve-of-growth analyses we deduce half-light radii for the NIRCam wavebands, finding that sizes are significantly smaller at longer wavelengths in all cases, in particular that the median size ratio between F444W and F150W is $0.6\pm0.1$. However, we also find that F444W sizes, roughly corresponding to rest-frame $H$-band, are not smaller than those of submillimeter continuum as measured by ALMA, contrasting recent predictions from theoretical models. Our results suggest that while stellar bulges are undergoing an active formation phase in SMGs at $z\sim2$, the total stellar masses of SMGs are still dominated by their disks, not bulges.

摘要: Submillimetre galaxies represent a rapid growth phase of both star formation and massive galaxies. Mapping SMGs in galaxy protoclusters provides key insights into where and how these extreme starbursts take place in connections with the assembly of the large-scale structure in the early Universe. We search for SMGs at 850$\,\mu m$ using JCMT/SCUBA-2 in two massive protoclusters at $z=2.24$, BOSS1244 and BOSS1542, and detect 43 and 54 sources with $S_{850}>4\,$mJy at the $4\sigma$ level within an effective area of 264$\,$arcmin$^2$, respectively. We construct the intrinsic number counts and find that the abundance of SMGs is $2.0\pm0.3$ and $2.1\pm0.2$ times that of the general fields, confirming that BOSS1244 and BOSS1542 contain a higher fraction of dusty galaxies with strongly enhanced star formation. The volume densities of the SMGs are estimated to be $\sim15-$30 times the average, significantly higher than the overdensity factor ($\sim 6$) traced by H$\alpha$ emission-line galaxies (HAEs). More importantly, we discover a prominent offset between the spatial distributions of the two populations in these two protoclusters -- SMGs are mostly located around the high-density regions of HAEs, and few are seen inside these regions. This finding may have revealed for the first time the occurrence of violent star formation enhancement in the outskirts of the HAE density peaks, likely driven by the boosting of gas supplies and/or starburst triggering events. Meanwhile, the lack of SMGs inside the most overdense regions at $z\sim2$ implies a transition to the environment disfavouring extreme starbursts.

摘要: We present ALMA 870um and JCMT SCUBA2 850um dust continuum observations of a sample of optically dark and strongly lensed galaxies in the cluster fields. The ALMA and SCUBA2 observations reach a median rms of about 0.11 mJy and 0.44 mJy, respectively, with the latter close to the confusion limit of the data at 850um. This represents one of the most sensitive searches for dust emission in optically dark galaxies. We detect the dust emission in 12 out of 15 galaxies at >3.8 sigma, corresponding to a detection rate of 80 per cent. Thanks to the gravitational lensing, our observations reach a deeper limiting flux than previous surveys in blank fields by a factor of 3. We estimate delensed infrared luminosities in the range log(LIR)=11.5-12.7 Lsun, which correspond to dust-obscured star formation rates (SFRs) of 30 to 520 Msun per year. Stellar population fits to the optical-to-NIR photometric data yield a median redshift z=4.26 and de-lensed stellar mass log(Mstar)=10.78 Msun. They contribute a lensing-corrected star-formation rate density at least an order of magnitude higher than that of equivalently massive UV-selected galaxies at z>3. The results suggest that there is a missing population of massive star-forming galaxies in the early Universe, which may dominate the SFR density at the massive end. Five optically dark galaxies are located within r99.974% from Poisson statistics. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with ALMA and JWST are crucial to confirm whether it is associated with a protocluster at similar redshifts.
