  • The Practice of Open Data Service Practice in Foreign Public Libraries and Its Inspiration to China

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] When fostering the development of public libraries, there are plenty of issues that should be taken into consideration including the ways of utilizing open data to explore innovative public service, combine the development of public libraries with the urban prosperity, enhance the connection between libraries and the society and strengthen the influences of libraries on society.[Method/process] Through the analysis of the open data service practice of foreign public libraries, we found that its services have the following characteristics:provide more abundant data resources, use open data to improve service efficiency, develop new data service products, collaborate in multiple ways, build open data using ecological environment, and promote public data literacy.[Result/conclusion] China's public libraries should improve the level of open data services from the following aspects:improve the construction of open data resources, establish awareness of innovative services, provide services that meet the needs of the public, strengthen cooperation with other institutions, and strengthen data literacy education.

  • Study of Users’ Differences of Needs for University Libraries’ Digital Scholarship Services: From a Perspective of Research Lifecycle

    Abstract: [Objective] This study focuses on the differences of needs of users with different research roles and from a variety of disciplines for digital scholarship services (DSS).
    [Methods] This study built a university library DSS framework covering all stages of research lifecycle based on the literature analysis. By using the framework, this study designed a questionnaire and applied KANO method to compare the differences of needs for DSS of users with different research roles and discipline backgrounds.
    [Results] Users of different research roles and discipline backgrounds have significant different needs for DSS in different stages of research lifecycle. The attractive and one-dimensional needs gather in research process and publication stages. Most of the services for research ideas stage belong to must-be needs. No reverse needs exist in DSS.
    [Limitations] This study has limitations in the number of research samples. It also focuses only on the research roles and discipline backgrounds of users, but did not consider other demographic characteristics.
    [Conclusions] In future, university libraries can focus more on users' attractive and one-dimensional needs,providing personalized DSS and cover more stages of research lifecycle.

  • Investigation and Enlightenment of the Status Quo of Online Education for Master of Library Science in iSchools Colleges in the United States

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] By analyzing the current situation of online education for master of library science in iSchools universities in the United States, this paper summarized the experience of online education for Master of Library Science in the United States, so as to provide reference for subsequent research.[Method/process] By investigating the official websites of 20 American iSchools colleges and universities, this paper analyzed and summarized their online education models in detail from the aspects of credit length, course quantity, course category and core course, etc., and drew some enlightenment for the construction and development of online education of library science in China.[Result/conclusion] Through investigations, it is found that the online education of iSchools library science related majors in the United States presents three characteristics:online education forms are flexible and diverse, and multiple measures are taken to ensure the quality of online teaching; the number of courses is large, the coverage is wide, and the curriculum system is complete; Online learning is basically the same as campus learning. Based on this, combined with the domestic reality, this paper puts forward that the construction of library science online education in China should pay attention to the development trend of international online education and reform the traditional education mode of library science; adopt various teaching methods to improve the online teaching quality of library science; take career development as the orientation, pay attention to personnel training individuation; realize the combination of library science tradition and online education.
