摘要: UVEX is a proposed medium class Explorer mission designed to provide crucial missing capabilities that will address objectives central to a broad range of modern astrophysics. The UVEX design has two co-aligned wide-field imagers operating in the FUV and NUV and a powerful broadband medium resolution spectrometer. In its two-year baseline mission, UVEX will perform a multi-cadence synoptic all-sky survey 50/100 times deeper than GALEX in the NUV/FUV, cadenced surveys of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, rapid target of opportunity followup, as well as spectroscopic followup of samples of stars and galaxies. The science program is built around three pillars. First, UVEX will explore the low-mass, low-metallicity galaxy frontier through imaging and spectroscopic surveys that will probe key aspects of the evolution of galaxies by understanding how star formation and stellar evolution at low metallicities affect the growth and evolution of low-metallicity, low-mass galaxies in the local universe. Such galaxies contain half the mass in the local universe, and are analogs for the first galaxies, but observed at distances that make them accessible to detailed study. Second, UVEX will explore the dynamic universe through time-domain surveys and prompt spectroscopic followup capability will probe the environments, energetics, and emission processes in the early aftermaths of gravitational wave-discovered compact object mergers, discover hot, fast UV transients, and diagnose the early stages of stellar explosions. Finally, UVEX will become a key community resource by leaving a large all-sky legacy data set, enabling a wide range of scientific studies and filling a gap in the new generation of wide-field, sensitive optical and infrared surveys provided by the Rubin, Euclid, and Roman observatories. This paper discusses the scientific potential of UVEX, and the broad scientific program.

摘要: In this second of a two-paper series, we present a detailed analysis of three HST observations taken $\sim$2-4 years post-explosion, examining the evolution of a UV-bright underlying source at the precise position of AT 2018cow. While observations at $\sim$2-3 years post-explosion revealed an exceptionally blue ($L_\nu\propto \nu^{1.99}$) underlying source with relatively stable optical brightness, fading in the NUV was observed at year 4, indicating flattening in the spectrum (to $L_\nu\propto \nu^{1.64}$). The resulting spectral energy distributions can be described by an extremely hot but small blackbody, and the fading may be intrinsic (cooling) or extrinsic (increased absorption). Considering possible scenarios and explanations, we disfavor significant contributions from stellar sources and dust formation based on the observed color and brightness. By comparing the expected power and the observed luminosity, we rule out interaction with the known radio-producing circumstellar material as well as magnetar spin down with $B\sim10^{15}\,\mathrm{G}$ as possible power sources, though we cannot rule out the possible existence of a denser CSM component (e.g., previously ejected hydrogen envelope) or a magnetar with $B\lesssim10^{14}\,\mathrm{G}$. Finally, we find that a highly-inclined precessing accretion disk can reasonably explain the color, brightness, and evolution of the underlying source. However, a major uncertainty in this scenario is the mass of the central black hole (BH), as both stellar-mass and intermediate-mass BHs face notable challenges that cannot be explained by our simple disk model, and further observations and theoretical works are needed to fully constrain the nature of this underlying source.

摘要: Type Ia Supernovae are thermonuclear explosions of white dwarf stars. They play a central role in the chemical evolution of the Universe and are an important measure of cosmological distances. However, outstanding questions remain about their origins. Despite extensive efforts to obtain natal information from their earliest signals, observations have thus far failed to identify how the majority of them explode. Here, we present infant-phase detections of SN 2018aoz from a brightness of -10.5 absolute AB magnitudes -- the lowest luminosity early Type Ia signals ever detected -- revealing a hitherto unseen plateau in the $B$-band that results in a rapid redward color evolution between 1.0 and 12.4 hours after the estimated epoch of first light. The missing $B$-band flux is best-explained by line-blanket absorption from Fe-peak elements in the outer 1% of the ejected mass. The observed $B-V$ color evolution of the SN also matches the prediction from an over-density of Fe-peak elements in the same outer 1% of the ejected mass, whereas bluer colors are expected from a purely monotonic distribution of Fe-peak elements. The presence of excess nucleosynthetic material in the extreme outer layers of the ejecta points to enhanced surface nuclear burning or extended sub-sonic mixing processes in some normal Type Ia Supernova explosions.

摘要: We present the largest and most homogeneous collection of near-infrared (NIR) spectra of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia): 339 spectra of 98 individual SNe obtained as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project-II. These spectra, obtained with the FIRE spectrograph on the 6.5 m Magellan Baade telescope, have a spectral range of 0.8-2.5 $\mu$m. Using this sample, we explore the NIR spectral diversity of SNe Ia and construct a template of spectral time series as a function of the light-curve-shape parameter, color stretch sBV. Principal Component Analysis is applied to characterize the diversity of the spectral features and reduce data dimensionality to a smaller subspace. Gaussian process regression is then used to model the subspace dependence on phase and light-curve shape and the associated uncertainty. Our template is able to predict spectral variations that are correlated with sBV , such as the hallmark NIR features: Mg II at early times and the H-band break after peak. Using this template reduces the systematic uncertainties in K-corrections by $\sim$90% compared to those from the Hsiao template (Hsiao 2009). These uncertainties are on the level of 4 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ mag on average. We have also explored a neural network approach using a conditional variational autoencoder that produces promising results for characterizing supernova spectra, though requires a larger data set to assemble comparable quality. This template can serve as the baseline spectral energy distribution for light-curve fitters and can identify peculiar spectral features that might point to compelling physics. The results presented here will substantially improve future SN Ia cosmological experiments, for both nearby and distant samples.

摘要: SN~2018aoz is a Type Ia SN with a $B$-band plateau and excess emission in the infant-phase light curves $\lesssim$ 1 day after first light, evidencing an over-density of surface iron-peak elements as shown in our previous study. Here, we advance the constraints on the nature and origin of SN~2018aoz based on its evolution until the nebular phase. Near-peak spectroscopic features show the SN is intermediate between two subtypes of normal Type Ia: Core-Normal and Broad-Line. The excess emission could have contributions from the radioactive decay of surface iron-peak elements as well as ejecta interaction with either the binary companion or a small torus of circumstellar material. Nebular-phase limits on H$\alpha$ and He~I favour a white dwarf companion, consistent with the small companion size constrained by the low early SN luminosity, while the absence of [O~I] and He~I disfavours a violent merger of the progenitor. Of the two main explosion mechanisms proposed to explain the distribution of surface iron-peak elements in SN~2018aoz, the asymmetric Chandrasekhar-mass explosion is less consistent with the progenitor constraints and the observed blueshifts of nebular-phase [Fe~II] and [Ni~II]. The helium-shell double-detonation explosion is compatible with the observed lack of C spectral features, but current 1-D models are incompatible with the infant-phase excess emission, $B_{\rm max}-V_{\rm max}$ color, and absence of nebular-phase [Ca~II]. Although the explosion processes of SN~2018aoz still need to be more precisely understood, the same processes could produce a significant fraction of Type Ia SNe that appear normal after $\sim$ 1 day.

摘要: Early-time radiative signals from type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can provide important constraints on the explosion mechanism and the progenitor system. We present observations and analysis of SN 2019np, a nearby SN Ia discovered within 1-2 days after the explosion. Follow-up observations were conducted in optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared bands, covering the phases from $\sim-$16.7 days to $\sim$+367.8 days relative to its $B-$band peak luminosity. The photometric and spectral evolutions of SN 2019np resembles the average behavior of normal SNe Ia. The absolute B-band peak magnitude and the post-peak decline rate are $M_{\rm max}(B)=-19.52 \pm 0.47$mag and $\Delta m_{\rm15}(B) =1.04 \pm 0.04$mag, respectively. No Hydrogen line has been detected in the near-infrared and nebular-phase spectra of SN 2019np. Assuming that the $^{56}$Ni powering the light curve is centrally located, we find that the bolometric light curve of SN 2019np shows a flux excess up to 5.0% in the early phase compared to the radiative diffusion model. Such an extra radiation perhaps suggests the presence of an additional energy source beyond the radioactive decay of central nickel. Comparing the observed color evolution with that predicted by different models such as interactions of SN ejecta with circumstellar matter (CSM)/companion star, a double-detonation explosion from a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf (WD), and surface $^{56}$Ni mixing, the latter one is favored.
