  • The aox--HeII EW Connection in Radio-Loud Quasars

分类: 其他 分类: 其他 提交时间: 2024-04-25

摘要: Radio-loud quasars (RLQs) are known to produce excess X-ray emission, compared to radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) of the same luminosity, commonly attributed to jet-related emission. Recently, we found that the HeII EW and $\alpha_{\rm{ox}}$ in RQQs are strongly correlated, which suggests that their extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray emission mechanisms are tightly related. Using 48 RLQs, we show that steep-spectrum radio quasars (SSRQs) and low radio-luminosity ($L_{\rm R}$) flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) follow the $\alpha_{\rm ox}$--HeII EW relation of RQQs. This suggests that the X-ray and EUV emission mechanisms in these types of RLQs is the same as in RQQs, and is not jet related. High-$L_{\rm R}$ FSRQs show excess X-ray emission given their HeII EW by a factor of $\approx$ 3.5, which suggests that only in this type of RLQ is the X-ray production likely jet related.

  • The Nature of Luminous Quasars with Very Large C IV Equivalent Widths

摘要: We report results for a complete sample of ten luminous radio-quiet quasars with large C IV equivalent widths (EW > 150 A). For 8/10 we performed Chandra snapshot observations. We find that, in addition to the enhanced C IV line EW, their He II and Mg II lines are enhanced, but the C III] line is not. Their X-ray emission is substantially stronger than expected from their ultraviolet luminosity. Additionally, these large C IV EW quasars show small C IV blueshifts and possibly low Eddington ratios, suggesting they are "extreme low Eigenvector 1 (EV1)" quasars. The mean excess He II EW is well-matched by Radiation Pressure Compression (RPC) photoionization models, with the harder aox ionizing spectrum. However, these results do not reproduce well the enhancement pattern of the C IV, Mg II, and C III] EWs, or the observed high C IV/Mg II ratio. RPC calculations indicate that the C IV/Mg II line ratio is an effective metallicity indicator, and models with sub-Solar metallicity gas and a hard ionizing continuum reproduce well the enhancement pattern of all four ultraviolet lines. We find that the C IV/Mg II line ratio in quasars is generally correlated with the excess X-ray emission. Extremely high EV1 quasars are characterized by high metallicity and suppressed X-ray emission. The underlying mechanism relating gas metallicity and X-ray emission is not clear, but may be related to radiation-pressure driven disk winds, which are enhanced at high metallicity, and consequent mass loading reducing coronal X-ray emission.

  • Radio spectra of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies observed with ATCA and VLASS

摘要: We present radio spectral analyses for a sample of 29 radio-quiet (RQ) and three radio-loud (RL) narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) detected with the Australia Telescope Compact Array at both 5.5 GHz and 9.0 GHz. The sample is characterized by L_bol/L_Edd > 0.15. The radio slopes in 25 of the 29 RQ NLS1s are steep (alpha_5.5-9.0 -0.5), indicating a compact optically-thick source, likely a relativistic jet. Archival data at 3.0 GHz, 1.4 GHz, and 0.843 GHz are also compiled, yielding a sample of 17 NLS1s detected in three bands or more. In nine objects, the radio spectra flatten at lower frequencies, with median slopes of alpha_5.5-9.0 = -1.21 +/- 0.17, flattening to alpha_3.0-5.5 = -0.97 +/- 0.27, and to alpha_1.4-3.0 = -0.63 +/- 0.16. A parabolic fit suggests a median spectral turnover of ~ 1 GHz, which implies synchrotron self-absorption in a source with a size of only a fraction of 1 pc, possibly a compact wind or a weak jet. Two objects show significant spectral steepening to alpha < -2 above 3 GHz or 5 GHz, which may suggest relic emission from past ejection of radio emitting plasma, of the order of a few years to a few decades ago. Finally, two objects present a single spectral slope consistent with star-forming activity.
