摘要: This article is based on the tutorial we gave at the hands-on workshop of the ICRANet-ISFAHAN Astronomy Meeting. We first introduce the basic theory of machine learning and sort out the whole process of training a neural network. We then demonstrate this process with an example of inferring redshifts from SDSS spectra. To emphasize that machine learning for astronomy is easy to get started, we demonstrate that the most basic CNN network can be used to obtain high accuracy, we also show that with simple modifications, the network can be converted for classification problems and also to processing gravitational wave data.

摘要: The gravitational-wave (GW) events, produced by the coalescence of binary neutron-stars (BNS), can be treated as the standard sirens to probe the expansion history of the Universe, if their redshifts could be determined from the electromagnetic observations. For the high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 0.1$) events, the short $\gamma$-ray bursts (sGRBs) and the afterglows are always considered as the primary electromagnetic counterparts. In this paper, by investigating various models of sGRBs and afterglows, we discuss the rates and distributions of BNS mergers' multi-messenger observations with GW detectors in second-generation (2G), 2.5G, 3G era with the detectable sGRBs and the afterglows. For instance, for Cosmic Explorer GW detector, the rate is about (300-3500) per year with GECAM-like detector for $\gamma$-ray emissions and LSST/WFST detector for optical afterglows. In addition, we find these events have the redshifts $z\lesssim 2$ and the inclination angles $\iota\lesssim 20^{\circ}$. These results justify the rough estimation in previous works. Considering these events as standard sirens to constrain the equation-of-state parameters of dark energy $w_{0}$ and $w_{a}$, we obtain the potential constraints of $\Delta w_{0}\simeq 0.02-0.05$ and $\Delta w_{a}\simeq 0.1-0.4$.

摘要: Radio frequency interference (RFI) is a significant challenge faced by today's radio astronomers. While most past efforts were devoted to cleaning the RFI from the data, we develop a novel method for categorizing and cataloguing RFI for forensic purpose. We present a classifier that categorizes RFI into different types based on features extracted using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Fourier analysis. The classifier can identify narrowband non-periodic RFI above 2 sigma, narrowband periodic RFI above 3 sigma, and wideband impulsive RFI above 5 sigma with F1 scores between 0.87 and 0.91 in simulation. This classifier could be used to identify the sources of RFI as well as to clean RFI contamination (particularly in pulsar search). In the long-term analysis of the categorized RFI, we found a special type of drifting periodic RFI that is detrimental to pulsar search. We also found evidences of an increased rate of impulsive RFI when the telescope is pointing toward the cities. These results demonstrate this classifier's potential as a forensic tool for RFI environment monitoring of radio telescopes.

摘要: One of the fundamental issues in cosmic ray physics is to explain the nature of cosmic ray acceleration and propagation mechanisms. Thanks to the precise cosmic ray data measured by recent space experiments, we are able to investigate the cosmic ray acceleration and propagation models more comprehensively and reliably. In this paper, we combine the secondary-to-primary ratios and the primary spectra measured by PAMELA, AMS02, ACE-CRIS and Voyager-1 to constrain the cosmic ray source and transport parameters. The study shows that the $Z>2$ data yield a medium-energy diffusion slope $\delta_{2}\sim\left(0.42, 0.48\right)$ and a high-energy slope $\delta_{3}\sim\left(0.22, 0.34\right)$. The $Z\leq2$ species obtain a looser constraint on $\delta_{2}\sim\left(0.38, 0.47\right)$, but a tighter constraint on $\delta_{3}\sim\left(0.21, 0.30\right)$. The overlaps infer that the heavy and light particles can give compatible results at medium to high energies. Besides, both the light and heavy nuclei indicate a consistent diffusion slope variation $\Delta\delta_{H}$ around $200\sim300$~GV. At low energies, significant disagreements exist between the heavy and light elements. The B/C ratio requires a much larger diffusion slope shift $\Delta\delta_{L}$ around 4 GV or a stronger \textit{Alfv$\acute{e}$n velocity} $v_{A}$ than the low-mass data. This indicates that the heavy and light particles may suffer different low-energy transport behaviors in Galaxy. However, better understanding on the consistency/inconsistency between the heavy and light cosmic rays relies on more precise cross-sections, better constraints on correlations in systematic errors of data, more accurate estimation on Galaxy halo size and more robust description for Solar modulation during the reversal period of HMF.

摘要: We have identified 453 compact dense cores in 3 mm continuum emission maps in the ATOMS (ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions) survey, and compiled three catalogues of high-mass star forming cores. One catalogue, referred to as H/UC-HII catalogue, includes 89 cores that enshroud hyper/ultra compact (H/UC) HII regions as characterized by associated compact H40alpha emission. A second catalogue, referred to as pure s-cHMC, includes 32 candidate Hot Molecular Cores (HMCs) showing rich spectra (N>20lines) of complex organic molecules (COMs) but not associated with H/UC-HII regions. The third catalogue, referred to as pure w-cHMC, includes 58 candidate HMCs with relatively low levels of COM richness and not associated with H/UC-HII regions. These three catalogues of dense cores provide an important foundation for future studies of the early stages of high-mass star formation across the Milky Way. We also find that nearly half of H/UC-HII cores are candidate HMCs. From the number counts of COM-containing and H/UC-HII cores, we suggest that the duration of high-mass protostellar cores showing chemically rich features is at least comparable to the lifetime of H/UC-HII regions. For cores in the H/UC-HII catalogue, the width of the H40alpha line increases as the core size decreases, suggesting that the non-thermal dynamical and/or pressure line-broadening mechanisms dominate on the smaller scales of the H/UC-HII cores.

摘要: We consider the flare prediction problem that distinguishes flare-imminent active regions that produce an M- or X-class flare in the future 24 hours, from quiet active regions that do not produce any flare within $\pm 24$ hours. Using line-of-sight magnetograms and parameters of active regions in two data products covering Solar Cycle 23 and 24, we train and evaluate two deep learning algorithms -- CNN and LSTM -- and their stacking ensembles. The decisions of CNN are explained using visual attribution methods. We have the following three main findings. (1) LSTM trained on data from two solar cycles achieves significantly higher True Skill Scores (TSS) than that trained on data from a single solar cycle with a confidence level of at least 0.95. (2) On data from Solar Cycle 23, a stacking ensemble that combines predictions from LSTM and CNN using the TSS criterion achieves significantly higher TSS than the "select-best" strategy with a confidence level of at least 0.95. (3) A visual attribution method called Integrated Gradients is able to attribute the CNN's predictions of flares to the emerging magnetic flux in the active region. It also reveals a limitation of CNN as a flare prediction method using line-of-sight magnetograms: it treats the polarity artifact of line-of-sight magnetograms as positive evidence of flares.

摘要: The advance of topological photonics has heralded a revolution for manipulating light as well as for the development of novel photonic devices such as topological insulator lasers. Here, we demonstrate topological lasing of circular polarization in a polymer-cholesteric liquid crystal (P-CLC) superlattice, tunable in the visible wavelength regime. By use of the femtosecond-laser direct-writing and self-assembling techniques, we establish the P-CLC superlattice with a controlled mini-band structure and a topological interface defect, thereby achieving a low threshold for robust topological lasing at about 0.4 uJ. Thanks to the chiral liquid crystal, not only the emission wavelength is thermally tuned, but the circularly polarized lasing is readily achieved. Our results bring about the possibility to realize compact and integrated topological photonic devices at low cost, as well as to engineer an ideal platform for exploring topological physics that involves light-matter interaction in soft-matter environments.
