  • Where intermediate-mass black holes could hide in the Galactic Centre: A full parameter study with the S2 orbit

分类: 天文学 >> 天文学 提交时间: 2023-02-19

摘要: In the Milky Way the central massive black hole, SgrA*, coexists with a compact nuclear star cluster that contains a sub-parsec concentration of fast-moving young stars called S-stars. Their location and age are not easily explained by current star formation models, and in several scenarios the presence of an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) has been invoked. We use GRAVITY astrometric and SINFONI, KECK, and GNIRS spectroscopic data of S2 to investigate whether a second massive object could be present deep in the Galactic Centre (GC) in the form of an IMBH binary companion to SgrA*. To solve the three-body problem, we used a post-Newtonian framework and consider two types of settings: (i) a hierarchical set-up where the star S2 orbits the SgrA* - IMBH binary and (ii) a non-hierarchical set-up where the IMBH trajectory lies outside the S2 orbit. In both cases we explore the full 20-dimensional parameter space by employing a Bayesian dynamic nested sampling method. For the hierarchical case we find: IMBH masses > 2000 Msun on orbits with smaller semi-major axes than S2 are largely excluded. For the non-hierarchical case the parameter space contains several pockets of valid IMBH solutions. However, a closer analysis of their impact on the resident stars reveals that IMBHs on semi-major axes larger than S2 tend to disrupt the S-star cluster in less than a million years. This makes the existence of an IMBH among the S-stars highly unlikely. The current S2 data do not formally require the presence of an IMBH. If an IMBH hides in the GC, it has to be either a low-mass IMBH inside the S2 orbit that moves on a short and significantly inclined trajectory or an IMBH with a semi-major axis >1". We provide the parameter maps of valid IMBH solutions in the GC and discuss the general structure of our results. (abridged)

  • Probing the Mpc-scale environment of hyperluminous infrared galaxies at 2

摘要: Protoclusters are important for studying how halo mass and stellar mass assemble in the early universe. Finding signposts of such over-dense regions is a popular method to identify protocluster candidates. Hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRGs), are expected to reside in overdense regions with massive halos. We study the Mpc-scale environment of the largest HLIRG sample to date and investigate whether they predominantly live in overdense regions. We first explore the surface density of Herschel 250 $\mu$m sources around HLIRGs and compare with that around random positions. Then, we compare the spatial distribution of neighbours around HLIRGs with that around randomly selected galaxies using a deep IRAC-selected catalogue with good-quality photometric redshifts. We also use a redshift-matched quasar sample and submillimeter galaxy (SMG) sample to validate our method, as previous clustering studies have measured the host halo masses of these populations. Finally, we adopt a Friends of Friends (FOF) algorithm to seek (proto)clusters that host HLIRGs. We find that HLIRGs tend to have more bright star-forming neighbours (with 250 $\mu$m flux density >10 mJy) within 100$\arcsec$ projected radius than a random galaxy at a 3.7$\sigma$ significance. In our 3D analysis, we find relatively weak excess of IRAC-selected sources within 3 Mpc around HLIRGs compared with random galaxy neighbours, mainly influenced by photometric redshift uncertainty and survey depth. We find a more significant difference (at a 4.7$\sigma$ significance) in the number of Low Frequency Array (LOFAR)-detected neighbours in the deepest EN1 field. HLIRGs at 3 < z < 4 show stronger excess compared to HLIRGs at 2 < z < 3, consistent with cosmic downsizing. Finally, we select and present a list of 30 most promising protocluster candidates for future follow-up observations.

  • Material radiopurity control in the XENONnT experiment

分类: 天文学 >> 天文学 提交时间: 2023-02-19

摘要: The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of the utmost importance for rare-event searches and thus critical to the XENONnT experiment. Results of an extensive radioassay program are reported, in which material samples have been screened with gamma-ray spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and $^{222}$Rn emanation measurements. Furthermore, the cleanliness procedures applied to remove or mitigate surface contamination of detector materials are described. Screening results, used as inputs for a XENONnT Monte Carlo simulation, predict a reduction of materials background ($\sim$17%) with respect to its predecessor XENON1T. Through radon emanation measurements, the expected $^{222}$Rn activity concentration in XENONnT is determined to be 4.2$\,(^{+0.5}_{-0.7})\,\mu$Bq/kg, a factor three lower with respect to XENON1T. This radon concentration will be further suppressed by means of the novel radon distillation system.

  • Quasi-BIC laser enabled by high-contrast grating resonator for gas detection

摘要: In this work, we propose and numerically investigate a two-dimensional microlaser based on the concept of bound states in the continuum (BIC). The device consists of a thin gain layer (Rhodamine 6G dye-doped silica) sandwiched between two high-contrast-grating layers. The structure supports various BIC modes upon a proper choice of topological parameters; in particular it supports a high-Q quasi-BIC mode when partially breaking a bound state in the continuum at $\Gamma$ point. The optically-pumped gain medium provides sufficient optical gain to compensate the quasi-BIC mode losses, enabling lasing with ultra-low pump threshold (fluence of 17 $\mu$J/cm$^2$) and very narrow optical linewidth in the visible range. This innovative device displays distinguished sensing performance for gas detection, and the emission wavelength sensitively shifts to the longer wavelength with the changing of environment refractive index (in order of $5 \times 10^{-4}$). The achieved bulk sensitivity is 221 nm/RIU with a high signal to noise ratio, and a record-high figure of merit reaches to 4420 RIU$^{-1}$. This ultracompact and low threshold quasi-BIC laser facilitated by the ultra-narrow resonance can serve as formidable candidate for on-chip gas sensor.
