Abstract: [Purposes]This paper analyzes the overall situation and development path of English medical journals in China and attempts to propose development suggestions, so as to provide reference for the improvement of medical journals and the construction of a world first-class medical scientific and technological journal system. [Method] A total of 120 English medical journals, which had approved CN number, included in the "Annual Report on the Impact Factors of Chinese Academic Journals" (2022), and funded by the National Science and Technology Journal Program, were included in this study. The basic information of the journals, as well as data on funding by the National Science and Technology Journal Program, domestic and international publishing cooperation, and inclusion in important international databases, were collected. The characteristics of discipline distribution, operating form, academic influence, open access, and cluster development of journals were analyzed. [Findings] In recent years, the number of English medical journals has rapidly increased in China, and the proportion of funding by the National Science and Technology Journal Program was high. These journals were mainly published quarterly. Universities and societies/associations were the main independent sponsors of the journals, and the proportion of collaborating sponsors was also high. The digital publishing of journals mainly cooperated with foreign publishers. Forty-three journals were simultaneously launched on domestic clustered digital publishing platforms. SCIE/SSCI, ESCI, and Scopus database included 43 journals (35.8%), 17 journals (14.2%), and 97 journals (80.8%), respectively, with a wide coverage of disciplines. Literatures from 99 journals (82.5%) could be retrieved in PubMed. DOAJ database included 78 (65.0%) English medical journals in China, most of which used the Knowledge Sharing License Agreement (CC Agreement) CC BY. [Conclusions] The structure of English medical journals in China has been further optimized, with interdisciplinary layout. The journals have diverse publication forms, and focus on improving international influence and visibility by including in international databases. OA publishing has developed rapidly. Domestic publishing operations are trying to develop towards clustering.
