Abstract: Free-piston Stirling machine has received much attention due to its high efficiency, fuel flexibility, high reliability and long lifetime. However, much research has focused on free piston Stirling generator and free piston Stirling cryocooler. Little attention has been paid to the free piston Stirling heat pump. In this paper, we have designed and manufactured a 1 kW class free piston Stirling heat pump and tested its performance systematically. A reversed arrangement has been put into practice, which could ensure the linear motor working at ambient temperature. The COP of 1.4 was achieved with the heating temperature at 50 癈 and the ambient temperature at -20 癈. Thermoacoustic theory was used for design and calculation and the results agreed well with the experiments.
