  • Comparative microbiome analysis of core drought responsive microbiome

    摘要: Plants evolved sophisticated genetic and metabolic mechanisms to shape their “core microbiome” under normal growth conditions. However, whether natural plant ecotypes re-shape a core “stress responsive microbiome” remains elusive. Considering that drought is the most serious abiotic stress worldwide, we conducted comparative microbiome analysis to study the potential conserved core root microbiome changes upon drought stress in natural Arabidopsis ecotypes. We screened the drought tolerance of 130 worldwide Arabidopsis ecotypes, and chose the extremely drought tolerant and sensitive ecotypes for comparative microbiome studies. We detected diverse differentially abundant ASVs , network driver taxa, as well as key functions pathways shared in diverse ecotypes upon drought stress, indicating the existence of some core drought-responsive microbiome changes. Our work unveiled the existence of a core drought-responsive microbiome and its critical role in enhancing plant fitness. This work also provided a research paradigm for guiding the discovery of stress-alleviating microbiomes in sustainable agriculture using natural ecotypes.

  • Excite atom-photon bound state inside the coupled-resonator waveguide coupled with a giant atom

    摘要: It is of fundamental interest in controlling the light-matter interaction for a long time in the field of quantum information processing. However, usual excitation with the propagating photon can hardly excite a localized state of light while keeping the atom under a subradiant decay in an atom-waveguide system. Here, we propose a model of coupling between a giant atom and the dynamically-modulated coupled-resonator waveguide and find that a bound state, where the light shows the localization effect and atom exhibits a subradiant decay time, can be excited by a propagating photon. An analytical treatment based on the separation of the propagating states and localized states of light has been used and provides inspiring explanation of our finding, i.e., a propagating photon can be efficiently converted to the localized light through the light-atom interactions in three resonators at frequency difference precisely equivalent to external modulation frequency. Our work therefore provides an alternative method for actively localizing the photon in a modulated coupled-resonator waveguide system interacting with giant atom, and also points out a way to study the light-atom interaction in a synthetic frequency dimension that holds the similar Hamiltonian.

  • Root hairs shape microbime structure and network interactions upon drought stress

    摘要: Drought is one of the most serious abiotic stresses which also shifts the composition of root associated microbiomes. However, there is a lack of genetic evidence regarding whether and how plant genetic effects positively reshape drought induced microbiome changes. Root hairs play essential roles in water uptaking, but whether root hairs also orchestrate microbiome re-shaping process during drought stress is unknown. By utilizing genetic mutants with enhanced or decreased root hair densities, we detected a significant effect of plant genetic effect on drought induced microbiome changes. In addition, the hairy mutant (gl2) triggers a deterministic process during drought induced microbiome re-assembly, which further confirms the involvement of host effects in re-shaping drought induced microbiome changes. Rhizobiaceae strains were detected as key biomarker species positively correlated with root hair densities. Moreover, the gl2 mutant also shapes more complex microbiome co-occurrence networks, with more Rhizobiaceae hubs. Our findings unveil the novel roles of root hairs in shaping microbiome structure and network interactions upon drought stress, particularly through regulating the abundance and network centrality of Rhizobiaceae strains. Root hair related mutants also broadly affect root metabolome upon drought stress. Understanding the physiological and microbial ecological basis of host mediated microbiome re-shaping under drought helps develop microbiome engineering approaches to combat climate changes.

  • A catalog of quasar candidates identified by astrometric and mid-infrared methods in Gaia EDR3

    摘要: Quasars are very important in materializing the reference frame. The excess emission of AGNs (active galactic nuclei) in the mid infrared band can be used to identify quasar candidates. As extremely distant and point like objects, quasars also could be further selected by astrometry method. Increasing the number of reliable quasar candidates is necessary in characterizing the properties of Gaia astrometric solution and evaluating the reliability of Gaia own quasars classification. We identify quasars by using appropriate AllWISE [W1-W2] color and different combinations of astrometric criteria. Together with the contamination and completeness, the magnitude, astrometric properties, density distribution, and the morphological indexes of these selected quasars are evaluated. We obtain a quasar candidate catalog of 1,503,373 sources, which contains 1,186,690 candidates (78.9%) in common with the Gaia EDR3_AGN catalog and 316,683 newly identified quasar candidates. The completeness of this catalog is around 80% compared to LQAC5, and the purity of the overall catalog is about 90%. We also found that the purity of quasar candidates selected by this method will decrease in the crowded sky area and the region with less WISE observations.

  • Development and application of high-precision multifunction astronomical plate digitizers in China

    摘要:Before charge-coupled device detectors became widely employed in observational astronomy, for more than a hundred years, the main detection method was photography on astronomical glass plates. Recently, in order to preserve these historical data and maintain their usability, the International Astronomical Union has appealed to all countries for global digitization of astronomical plates by developing or adopting advanced digitization technology. Specialized digitizers with high precision and high measuring speed represent key equipment for this task. The Shanghai Astronomical Observatory and the Nishimura Co., Ltd in Japan cooperated between 2013 and 2016 to develop the first Chinese high-precision astronomical plate digitizer, which was then used for complete digitization of all nighttime-observation astronomical plates in China. Then, in 2019–2021, the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory independently developed new models of plate digitizers that enabled countries such as Uzbekistan and Italy to digitize their astronomical plates. Additionally, a new high-precision and multifunction digitizer was also used to digitize valuable microscope slides from the Shanghai Natural History Museum, providing a successful example of crossdomain application of high-precision digitization technology.

  • ET White Paper: To Find the First Earth 2.0

    摘要: We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. In addition, the survey data will also facilitate studies in the fields of asteroseismology, Galactic archeology, time-domain sciences, and black holes in binaries.
