• A detection of the layered structure of nearby open clusters

    摘要: We applied the newly developed rose diagram overlay method to detect the layered structure of 88 nearby open clusters ($\leq$500~pc) on the three projections after the distance correction of their member stars, based on the catalog in literature. The results show that with the rose diagram overlay method, a total of 74 clusters in our sample have a layered structure, while the remaining clusters are without a clear layered structure. We for the first time defined the layered structure parameters for the sample clusters. Meanwhile, we found that the layered circle core area ($s$) has a strong positive correlation with the number of cluster members, while the kernel instability index ($\eta$) has a strong negative correlation with the number of cluster members. Our study provides a novel perspective for the detection of the layered structure of open clusters.

  • Galaxy Deblending using Residual Dense Neural networks

    摘要: We present a new neural network approach for deblending galaxy images in astronomical data using Residual Dense Neural network (RDN) architecture. We train the network on synthetic galaxy images similar to the typical arrangements of field galaxies with a finite point spread function (PSF) and realistic noise levels. The main novelty of our approach is the usage of two distinct neural networks: i) a \emph{deblending network} which isolates a single galaxy postage stamp from the composite and ii) a \emph{classifier network} which counts the remaining number of galaxies. The deblending proceeds by iteratively peeling one galaxy at a time from the composite until the image contains no further objects as determined by classifier, or by other stopping criteria. By looking at the consistency in the outputs of the two networks, we can assess the quality of the deblending. We characterize the flux and shape reconstructions in different quality bins and compare our deblender with the industry standard, \texttt{SExtractor}. We also discuss possible future extensions for the project with variable PSFs and noise levels.

  • Neural Network Based Point Spread Function Deconvolution For Astronomical Applications

    摘要: Optical astronomical images are strongly affected by the point spread function (PSF) of the optical system and the atmosphere (seeing) which blurs the observed image. The amount of blurring depends both on the observed band, and more crucially, on the atmospheric conditions during observation. A typical astronomical image will therefore have a unique PSF that is non-circular and different in different bands. Observations of known stars give us a determination of this PSF. Therefore, any serious candidate for production analysis of astronomical images must take the known PSF into account during the image analysis. So far the majority of applications of neural networks (NN) to astronomical image analysis have ignored this problem by assuming a fixed PSF in training and validation. We present a neural network based deconvolution algorithm based on Deep Wiener Deconvolution Network (DWDN) that takes the PSF shape into account when performing deconvolution as an example of one possible approach to enabling neural network to use the PSF information. We study the performance of several versions of this algorithm under realistic observational conditions in terms of recovery of most relevant astronomical quantities such as colors, ellipticities and orientations. We also investigate the performance of custom loss functions and find that they cause modest improvements in the recovery of astronomical quantities.

  • Searching for Variable Stars in the Open Cluster NGC 2355 and Its Surrounding Region

    摘要: We have investigated the variable stars in the field surrounding NGC 2355 based on the time-series photometric observation data. More than 3000 CCD frames were obtained in the V band spread over 13 nights with the Nanshan One-meter Wide-field Telescope. We have detected 88 variable stars, containing 72 new variable stars and 16 known variable stars. By analyzing these light curves, we classified the variable stars as follows: 26 eclipsing binaries, 52 pulsating stars, 4 rotating variables, and 6 unclear type variable stars for which their periods are much longer than the time baseline chosen. Employing Gaia DR2 parallax, kinematics, and photometry, the cluster membership of these variable stars were also analyzed for NGC 2355. In addition to the 11 variable members reported by Cantat-Gaudin et al. (2018), we identify 4 more variable member candidates located at the outer region of NGC 2355 and showed homogeneity in space positions and kinematic properties with the cluster members. The main physical parameters of NGC 2355 estimated from the two-color and color-magnitude diagrams are log(age/yr) = 8.9, E(B - V) = 0.24 mag, and [Fe/H] = - 0.07 dex.

  • Designing thermal radiation metamaterials via hybrid adversarial autoencoder and Bayesian optimization

    摘要: Designing thermal radiation metamaterials is challenging especially for problems with high degrees of freedom and complex objective. In this letter, we have developed a hybrid materials informatics approach which combines the adversarial autoencoder and Bayesian optimization to design narrowband thermal emitters at different target wavelengths. With only several hundreds of training data sets, new structures with optimal properties can be quickly figured out in a compressed 2-dimensional latent space. This enables the optimal design by calculating far less than 0.001\% of the total candidate structures, which greatly decreases the design period and cost. The proposed design framework can be easily extended to other thermal radiation metamaterials design with higher dimensional features.

  • Arm locking using laser frequency comb

    摘要: In this work, we describe an updated version of single arm locking, and the noise amplification due to the nulls can be flexibly restricted with the help of optical frequency comb. We show that, the laser phase noise can be divided by a specific factor with optical frequency comb as the bridge. The analytical results indicate that, the peaks in the science band have been greatly reduced. The performance of the noise suppression shows that the total noise after arm locking can well satisfy the requirement of time delay interferometry, even with the free-running laser source. We also estimate the frequency pulling characteristics of the updated single arm locking, and the results suggest that the pulling rate can be tolerated, without the risk of mode hopping. Arm locking will be a valuable solution for the noise reduction in the space-borne GW detectors. We demonstrate that, with the precise control of the returned laser phase noise, the noise amplification in the science band can be efficiently suppressed based on the updated single arm locking. Not only our method allows the suppression of the peaks, the high gain, low pulling rate, it can also serve for full year, without the potential risk of locking failure due to the arm length mismatch. We finally discuss the unified demonstration of the updated single arm locking, where both the local and the returned laser phase noises can be tuned to generate the expected arm-locking sensor actually. Our work could provide a powerful method for the arm locking in the future space-borne GW detectors.

  • Variable Stars in the 50BiN Open Cluster Survey. III. NGC 884

    摘要: Open clusters are the basic building blocks that serve as a laboratory for the study of young stellar populations in the Milky Way. Variable stars in open clusters provide a unique way to accurately probe the internal structure, temporal and dynamical evolutionary stages of individual stars and the host cluster. The most powerful tool for such studies is time-domain photometric observations. This paper follows the route of our previous work, concentrating on a photometric search for variable stars in NGC 884. The target cluster is the companion of NGC 869, forming the well-known double cluster system that is gravitationally bound. From the observation run in 2016 November, a total of 9247 B-band CCD images and 8218 V-band CCD images were obtained. We detected a total of 15 stars with variability in visual brightness, including five Be stars, three eclipsing binaries, and seven of unknown types. Two new variable stars were discovered in this work. We also compared the variable star content of NGC 884 with its companion NGC 869.
