  • Gauge invariance in phase-gradient metagratings

    摘要: Phase gradient metagratings/metasurfaces (PGMs) have provided a new paradigm for light manipulations. In this work, we will show the existence of gauge invariance in PGMs, i.e., the diffraction law of PGMs is independent of the choice of initial value of abrupt phase shift that induces the phase gradient. This gauge invariance ensures the well-studied ordinary metallic grating that can be regarded as a PGM, with its diffraction properties that can fully predicted by generalized diffraction law with phase gradient. The generalized diffraction law presents a new insight for the famous effect of Wood's Anomalies and Rayleigh conjecture.

  • Single-shot measurement of frequency-resolved state of polarization dynamics in ultrafast lasers using dispersed division-of-amplitude

    摘要: Precise measurement of multi-parameters of ultrafast lasers is vital both in scientific investigations and technical applications, such as, optical field manipulation, pulse shaping, sample characteristics test, and biomedical imaging. Tremendous progress in parameter measurement of ultrafast laser has been made, including single-shot spectra acquired by time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform in spectral domain, and pulse magnification or compression realized by time lens in temporal domain. Nevertheless, single-shot measurement of frequency-resolved states of polarization (SOPs) of ultrafast lasers has not been reported so far, and the unregular SOP evolution dynamics in ultrafast pulses is hardly explored. Here, we demonstrate a new single-shot frequency-resolved SOPs measurement system by utilizing division-of-amplitude method under far-field approximation. Large dispersion is utilized to time-stretch the laser pulses, where the spectrum information is mapped into temporal waveform via dispersive Fourier transform. By calibrating system matrix with different wavelengths, the precise frequency-resolved SOPs are obtained together with high speed opto-electron detection. We demonstrate applications in direct measurement of transient mode-locked fiber laser dynamics. We observe complex frequency-dependent SOPs dynamics in the building up of dissipative solitons, and apparent discrepancy of SOPs between sideband and main peak in conventional solitons. Our observations reveal that the SOP plays a far more complex part in mode-locking process, which is different from the traditional viewpoint. Taking advantage of broadband achromatic optical elements, this method can be extended to measurement of much broad pulse lasers, which will pave the way for reliable measurement and precise control of ultrafast lasers with frequency-resolved SOPs structures.

  • Intrinsic Spectrum Analysis of Laser Dynamics Based on Fractional Fourier Transform

    摘要: Intrinsic spectrum that results from the coupling of spontaneous emission in a laser cavity, can determine the energy concentration and coherence of lasers, which is crucial for the optical high-precision measurement. Up to now, it is hard to analyze the intrinsic spectrum in the high-speed laser dynamics process, especially under the condition of fast wavelength sweeping. In this work, a new method to analyze the laser intrinsic spectrum is proposed with the laser energy decomposition to a series of chirp-frequency signals, which is realized by fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) of the coherently reconstructed laser waveform. The new understanding of the energy distribution of lasers contributes to the accurate characterization of laser dynamical parameters in time-frequency domain. In the proof-of-concept experiment, the time-frequency dynamical process of a commercial wavelength swept laser is tested with different wavelength-scanning speeds, and the most suitable measurement time window width required for the FRFT-based narrowest spectrum is also explored. The proposed analysis method of laser dynamical parameters will promote the understanding of laser dynamics, and benefit for the optical precision measurement applications.

  • PRN: a preprint service for catalyzing R-fMRI and neuroscience related studies

    摘要: Sharing drafts of scientific manuscripts on preprint hosting services for early exposure and pre-publication feedback is a well-accepted practice in fields such as physics, astronomy, or mathematics. The field of neuroscience, however, has yet to adopt the preprint model. A reason for this reluctance might partly be the lack of central preprint services for the field of neuroscience. To address this issue, we announce the launch of Preprints of the R-fMRI Network (PRN), a community funded preprint hosting service. PRN provides free-submission and free hosting of manuscripts for resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) and neuroscience related studies. Submissions will be peer viewed and receive feedback from readers and a panel of invited consultants of the R-fMRI Network. All manuscripts and feedback will be freely available online with citable permanent URL for open-access. The goal of PRN is to supplement the “peer reviewed” journal publication system – by more rapidly communicating the latest research achievements throughout the world. We hope PRN will help the field to embrace the preprint model and thus further accelerate R-fMRI and neuroscience related studies, eventually enhancing human mental health.

  • Reliability of sleep deprivation-associated spontaneous brain activity and behavior

    摘要: Recent studies have indicated that sleep deprivation (SD) alters intrinsic low-frequency connectivity in the resting brain, mainly focusing on the default mode network (DMN) and its anticorrelated network (ACN). These networks hold key functions in segregating internally and externally directed awareness. However, far less attention has been paid to investigation of the altered amplitude of these low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) at the whole-brain level and more importantly by what extent the sleep-deprived resting brain pattern can be reproducible and predict individual behavioral performance. The aim of this study was to characterize more clearly the influence of sleep on the whole brain level of ALFF changes and its relation with the performance of a lexical decision task in the sleep deprivation. Sixteen healthy participants underwent fMRI three times: once after a normal night of sleep in the rested wakefulness (RW) state and two following approximately 24 h of total SD separated by an interval of two weeks (SD1 and SD2). Our behavioral results showed that sleep stabilizes performance whereas two sleep deprivation even at an interval of two weeks consistently deteriorates it. Sleep deprivation attenuated the ALFF mainly in the bilateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and right inferior parietal lobule (IPL). By contrast, the enhanced ALFF emerged in the left sensorimotor cortex (SMA), visual cortex and left fusiform gyrus. Conjunction analysis of SD1 and SD2 versus the control maps and voxel-wise ICC analysis revealed that these SD induced ALFF changes showed a significantly high reliability (ICC>0.5). Particularly, the attenuation of the right IPL presents a significant negative relation with the behavior performance and can be reproducible for two SD at an interval of two weeks. Our results suggest that ALFF is a stable measure in study of SD, and the right IPL may represent a stable biomarker that responds to sleep loss.
