Brain Functional Specialization is Enhanced among Tai Chi Chuan Practitioners

Objective: To investigate the effect of long-term Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) practice on practitioners’ brain functional specialization compare with the TCC novices. Methods: 22 TCC practitioners (52.4 ± 6.8 years; 7 males; educated years:12.18 ± 3.03 years) and 18 healthy controls (54.8 ± 6.8 years; 8 males; education years:11.78 ± 2.90 years) matched by age, sex, and education were enrolled. Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning and cognitive test to measure the differences in functional specialization and cognitive function. Functional specialization was evaluated by voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) method. Results: Lower middle frontal gyrus (MFG) VMHC in TCC practitioners compared to controls. For TCC practitioners, the longer they practice, the lower their VMHC in precentral and precuneus. TCC practitioners showed better cognition performance. Limitations: Relatively small sample size. Conclusions: Changed VMHC indicated that TCC practice could enhance functional specialization in the middle frontal cortex of practitioners, which may be associated with higher-order cognitive ability.

The in-plane ferromagnetic ordering in half-metallic CuCr2Se4?xBrx (x=0.25) single crystal

The transport property of chalcogenide spinel CuCr2Se4 with an itinerant ferromagnetic ground state can be modulated by doping of bromine, where the half-metallic state can be realized around x = 0.25 in CuCr2Se4?xBrx system. In this work, the single crystal CuCr2Se4?xBrx (x =0.25) with the cleave surface (111) plane has been investigated by the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The EPR results show that the in-plane magnetization is strong while the out-ofplane one is weak, which indicate that the spins are ferromagnetic ordered within the (111) plane. In addition, the isothermal EPR spectra in the ferromagnetic phase display that the spin coupling strength (λ) and crystal field (ΔCF ) depend on the rotation angle φ as relation λ/ΔCF / cos φ. Moreover, the peak-to-peak linewidth ΔHPP increases linearly with the decrease of temperature, which suggests that the spin-orbit coupling is enhanced linearly with temperature cooling.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Study of the Pyrochlore Iridate Gd2Ir2O7

The pyrochlore iridate Gd2Ir2O7 has been investigated by means of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. A magnetic transition at T¤ ? 20 K is found in addition to the transition at TC ? 130 K, which has not been reported previously. The phase transition at TC, which corresponds to a resistivity transition, is resulted from the long-range spin ordering of Ir4+ ions in all-in/all out state. However, the magnetic transition at T¤, which is regardless of resistivity transition, is not caused by Ir4+ but Gd3+ ions. Both of the magnetic transitions are irrelevant to the lattice distortion. We suggest that the competition between the enhanced paramagnetism of Gd3+ ions and the f ? d interaction should be responsible for the magnetic transition at T¤.

Analytic Forms for Cross Sections of Di-lepton Production from e+e? Collisions around the J/ψ Resonance

A detailed theoretical derivation of the cross sections of e+e? → e+e? and e+e? → ?+?? around the J/ψ resonance is reported. The resonance and interference parts of the cross sections, related to J/ψ resonance parameters, are calculated. Higher-order corrections for vacuum polarization and initial-state radiation are consid-ered. An arbitrary upper limit of radiative correction integration is involved. Full and simpli?ed versions of analytic formulae are given with precision at the level of 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively. Moreover, the results obtained in the paper can be applied to the case of the ψ(3686) resonance.

This paper focuses on the enhancement of thermal stability of Ag-Al2O3 nanocermet films by means of alloying of Ag nanoparticles with Al element. The optical analysis demonstrated the AgAl embedded Al2 O3 cermet films (namely, AgAl-Al2O3) possess excellent thermal tolerance even at 500?C for 260h under nitrogen ambient. The evolution of microstructural and chemical properties of Al2O3/AgAl-Al2O3/Al2O3 stack layers during the annealing process was comprehensively investigated, in order to grasp the thermal stability mechanism. It is believed that the enhanced thermal stability was ascribed to the formation of fresh alumina as capping layer riveted on the Ag nanoparticles surfaces, which acted as the pinning points to prevent silver element from migrating so as to maintain the expected optical properties.

Template-free fabrication of Ag nanowire arrays/Al2O3 assembly with flexible collective longitudinal-mode resonance and ultrafast nonlinear optical response

We utilized a co-sputtering technique without any templates, featuring growing and etching synchronously, to delicately fabricate dense and ultra ne Ag nanowire arrays/alumina matrix composite lms. Both the diameter and separation distance of the Ag nanowire arrays in the composites are not only within the scope of sub-10 nm but also tunable, which is very hard to accomplish for the conventional optical lithography- or template-based method. It is exhibited that the collective longitudinal plasmon resonance of the composite lms, covering a wide range from visible to the near infrared region, is extremely sensitive to the geometrical parameters of the Ag nanowires, owing to the strong plasmonic coupling among neighboring nanowires. The experimental observations were also theoretically supported by the near- eld electromagnetic numerical simulation. More interestingly, the fabricated composite lms demonstrated ultrafast nonlinear optical response in the visible light region under femtosecond laser excitation, possessing a short relaxation time of 1.45 ps for the longitudinal mode (L mode) resonance. These results indicate that the proposed composite lms as a building block with exotic optical properties could provide an opportunity to construct integrated nanodevices for plasmonic optical applications.

The Contribution of One-photon Annihilation at ψ(2S) in e+e- Experiment

The continuum one-photon annihilation at ψ(2S) in e+e-?experiment is studied. Such contributions to the measured final state ωπ0 and π+π- at ψ(2S) mass are estimated by phenomenological models. It is found that these contributions must be taken into account in the determination of branching ratios of ψ(2S) →ωπ0 and ψ(2S) → π+π- , as well as other electromagnetic decay modes. The study eaches the conclusion that in order for BES to obtain the correct branching ratios on these decay modes, at least 10pb-1 of data below the ψ(2S) peak is needed.
